RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013-14

Subscribe now to see our 2013-14 outlook.

2012-13

The ultimate "stretch four," Bonner's job is to create space for the offense by camping out at the three-point line and hitting jumpers. He excels at the role, hitting over 40 percent of his threes last season - a little under two makes per game in about 20 minutes of run. For fantasy purposes, he's strictly a specialist and won't contribute much of anything in other categories.

2011-12

Bonner provides the Spurs with more value than he does fantasy owners. The one area that he really helps fantasy owners is shooting from distance, as he averaged 1.6 three-pointers per game in 21.7 minutes last season. If someone gets injured up front and Bonner is forced to log heavy minutes, he could help fantasy owners looking for help behind the arc.

2010-11

Matt Bonner shoots threes, as a staggering 62 percent of Bonner’s shot attempts last year were behind the three-point line. Past his three-point shooting skill, Bonner does little else, and won't see nearly enough playing time to contribute in any other category.

2009-10

Bonner saw plenty of time as a starter last season, but McDyess' arrival, coupled with the additions of DeJuan Blair and Richard Jefferson, will certainly eat away at his production. He'll likely be the third big man in the rotation, but that won't be enough to make him fantasy-worthy in most formats unless Duncan or McDyess breaks down due to injury. If he did get a chance at increased playing time, he can certainly help out in the three-pointer categories (1.5 treys per game last season).

2008-09

Bonner came to the Spurs two years ago and was expected to provide firepower from the 3-point line off the bench. Two years later and Bonner looks completely lost. Last season he was limited to just 12.5 minutes a game and shot just 33.6 percent from the 3-point line. Bonner lacks lateral quickness and is often a defensive liability, something that will limit his playing time with coach Gregg Popovich. Unless Bonner can regain his shooting form, don't expect a lot of minutes for him.

2007-08

Bonner did not get a great deal of playing time in his first year with the Spurs. He proved to be a defensive liability at times and shot just 38.3% from the 3-point line, down from his nearly 42 percent career average. Bonner has limited fantasy value, as he does not rebound, block shots or get assists.

2006-07

Bonner was brought in by the Spurs to create match up problems on the perimeter and to complement the post presence of Duncan. He is an excellent 3-point shooter (career 42.1%) and foul shooter (career 81%). While Bonner is a good defensive player, his fantasy value is limited as he does not rebound, block shots or get assists.

2004-05

Bonner averaged nearly 20 points and 10 boards per game last year – in Italy. He’s a 6’9” banger who, at best, could provide a bit of energy off an NBA bench. Bonner will come to camp fighting for the 12th spot on the roster, and isn’t likely to advance much further up the depth chart if he wins it.
