Whittington will play the upcoming season in the D-League, ESPN reports.

Whittington spent a season-and-a-half at Georgetown before being ruled academically ineligible in January 2013. He sat out the rest of the 2012-13 season and suffered a torn ACL in June. This past December, Whittington announced his intent to transfer from Georgetown, and he committed to Rutgers a few days later. Now, five months after the commitment, it appears Whittington has opted to try his luck in the D-League instead.

Whittington is not expected to play in 2013-14, CBS Sports reports.

Whittington tore his ACL in June. He missed the majority of the 2012-13 season after being ruled academically ineligible. The forward still has two years of eligibility remaining, but the Hoyas will need to find someone else to anchor the frontcourt.

Whittington injured his knee and could miss the 2013-14 season, reports. The extent of the injury was not yet determined and a source told ESPN, "He could still come back. They are going to have it looked at again soon."

Whittington was limited to 13 games in 2012-13 after being declared academically ineligible. He averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds. For the new season, he would have inherited some of Otto Porter's responsibilities, but someone else will have to step up (possibly freshman Reggie Cameron).

Whittington has been declared academically ineligible, the AP reports. "Greg will not participate in competition until further notice," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said in a statement.

This is quite a blow for the Hoyas. Whittington is averaging 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds, both second on the team behind Otto Porter. Jabril Trawick started in Whittington's place against St. John's on Saturday, but coach Thompson may need to go with more size in future match ups.
