McDermott has been named the John R. Wooden award winner as the best men's basketball player in the country for the 2013-2014 season, reports.

McDermott has long been considered the favorite to win the award, so his victory comes as no surprise. He averaged 26.7 points per game, the top mark in the nation. He finished as the sport's fifth leading all-time scorer, topping players such as Larry Bird and Oscar Robertson. As a graduating senior, McDermott figures to enter the NBA draft this season, where he is currently projected to be a late lottery pick

He has now won the POY award three straight years, twice in the Missouri Valley Conference and now once in the Big East. The senior forward is averaging 26.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this year.

McDermott scored a game-high 39 points, including 13-of-17 from the field, with seven boards in the win over Villanova on Sunday.

The Wildcats have just two conference losses and both are to the Bluejays. In the first meeting, Creighton went crazy from long range, but McDermott led the way from inside the paint (along with four 3-pointers) in the home win. He has scored at least 32 points in three of his last five games.

McDermott carried his team offensively Sunday, with 25 points (10-18 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 4-5 FT) along with five rebounds, and a steal in 37 minutes.

Despite all McDermott's points, his Bluejays still came up short against St. John's. Barring an injury, McDermott will continue to shoot and remain among the league leaders in points per game.
