RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
Smith figures to be one of AHL Wilkes Barres's best players in 2012-13. That said, the 27-year old has seen scattered time in the NHL. He played in seven games for the Islanders in 2008-09 and 16 games for the Lightning last year. The winger totaled 69 points in 64 games for AHL Norfolk last season, winning a Calder Cup. If Smith puts on the black and gold of Pittsburgh, it will likely be as an injury replacement for a game or two.
Smith is a agitating winger with a decent nose for the net ... the nets in the AHL, that is. He has all of seven NHL games in his jock and that was with the lowly Islanders a few seasons back. It's unlikely he'll crack a much better lineup like the Bolts.
Smith continued to show the ability to put points on the board last year as he notched 30 goals and 62 points in 76 games for the Sound Tigers. The Isles could use some of that scoring touch, but he will probably remain in the AHL for one more season.
Smith split the 2008-09 season between Bridgeport (AHL) and Utah (ECHL). He has a good skill set, but is not ready to compete at the NHL level yet.
This year's training camp will be Smith's first taste of the NHL. He completed his sophomore year at New Hampshire this past season, then jumped to the AHL for a brief stint. He'll need a few years to develop to be ready to make the jump to the NHL.
