2025 Fantasy Outlook
It was another bumpy road for Grubauer in 2024-25, as he was waived at the end of January and spent a month with AHL Coachella Valley. It's not all that different from what Tristan Jarry went through in Pittsburgh, though playing for the Kraken, Grubauer's demotion got less attention. The difference in situations is that Grubauer doesn't have a clear path to No. 1 status anymore, as Joey Daccord has taken over that role in Seattle. Grubauer still has two years left at a $5.9 million cap hit, so he'll be tough to move even with the salary cap rising. The German is projected to be a backup to begin 2025-26, and after an 8-17-1 season with a 3.49 GAA and a .875 save percentage, there's no reason to assume he'll improve much even in limited usage. Set to defend home crease
Grubauer will draw the home start during Monday's preseason game against the Flames, Mike Benton of the Kraken Audio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Grubauer is in the midst of a competition to serve as the Kraken's No. 2 netminder to begin the regular season. He started on the road against the Flames last Tuesday and turned aside 17 of 19 shots while playing approximately half of the game. While he's been relatively solid, Matt Murray has also played well during the preseason, so Grubauer could need another productive showing during Monday's matchup in order to keep pace.

Grubauer is easy to dismiss with a line of 14-16-2, a 2.85 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 2023-24, but there's a silver lining that a few fantasy managers will know. He went 5-9-1 with a 3.25 GAA and .884 save percentage in 17 games while playing through an injury. Grubauer was much better after missing 24 contests with a suspected groin issue, going 9-6-1 with a 2.51 GAA and a .912 save percentage in 19 outings. Best case, Grubauer wrestles the starter's reins away from Joey Daccord, who was outstanding last season, and surprises fantasy managers. More likely, he pushes Daccord, and the two men end up in a platoon. The Kraken have upgraded their forward corps and blue line so that extra support will help whoever occupies the net.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Not guaranteed backup job
Grubauer will have to fend off Matt Murray for the Kraken's backup goalie spot, Curtis Crabtree of Fox 13 Seattle reports Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Grubauer's $5.9 million cap hit makes it unpleasant to stash him in the AHL, but he was waived and sent down in 2024-25. General manager Jason Botterill also indicated the Kraken could carry three goalies in 2025-26, though that would reduce their options for integrating forward prospects into the lineup. In any case, Grubauer will have competition to deal with in training camp, which could end up bringing out the best in him in the long run.
