2025 Fantasy Outlook
Slavin turned in another great season as the Hurricanes’ top defenseman, logging 21:34 of ice time per game over 80 regular-season contests. One of the ultimate examples of a player that all 32 NHL general managers want but one that doesn’t grab headlines, the midseason 4 Nations Face-Off tournament put on display what makes Slavin such a valuable piece of a roster, and that’s his ability to play a shutdown game against the other team’s best each and every night. However, for fantasy purposes, his six goals and 21 assists don’t jump off the page, and he doesn’t play on the power play at all. The 31-year-old has never had double-digit goals and has eclipsed the 40-point plateau just once in 10 years. Aside from blocked shots, which he had 136 of last season, Slavin won’t be stuffing the stat sheet too often. Read Past Outlooks

Available for Thursday
Slavin (undisclosed) is good to play in Carolina's season opener against New Jersey on Thursday, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Slavin recorded six goals, 27 points and 136 blocks in 80 regular-season appearances with Carolina in 2024-25. The 31-year-old is likely to play on the first pairing, but he probably won't see time with the man advantage versus the Devils.

Slavin agreed to an eight-year, $51.69 million contract extension with the Hurricanes in July. He produced six goals, 37 points, 151 shots on net and 120 blocked shots in 81 regular-season contests during the 2023-24 campaign. Slavin often plays against the opposition's best players and doesn't take many penalties, winning the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the second time in the last four seasons. Slavin is a player who means much more to his team than he does in fantasy circles, though he can produce a decent amount of shots and blocks. Offensively, he has surpassed the 40-point mark once in his career and typically goes long stretches without finding the scoresheet. Slavin can be a spare defender in deeper leagues, but your attention should probably be elsewhere on draft day.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Extension finalized
Slavin and the Hurricanes are expected to announce a long-term contract extension Monday, Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Slavin is entering the final year of a seven-year, $37.1 million deal he signed with Carolina back in July of 2017. The 30-year-old blueliner won't see significant opportunities with the man advantage -- he hasn't registered a power-play point in either of the last two seasons -- but he was still able to garner six goals and 31 helpers in 81 regular-season contests in 2023-24.
