Long scored a goal on three shots (two on target) in Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Since coming back from a sprained ankle, Long has played the full 90 in each of the past two matches and scored his first Premier League goal since opening day in the process. He now has five goals in 10 matches across all competitions, partly in thanks to a brace in the Capital One Cup against MK Dons. When healthy and playing, Long can be the center forward option the Saints need alongside Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane.

Long surprised manager Ronald Koeman by returning from his ankle injury in Ireland's match versus Bosnia on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old had not trained, let alone played, in roughly six weeks, so his 40-minute cameo naturally comes as a bit of a surprise. However, with no reported setbacks stemming from the match, Long stands a chance to play against Stoke on Saturday. He is unlikely to see a full complement of minutes, but an appearance as a substitute is not out of the question.

Long (ankle) has been ruled out for Saturday's fixture against Sunderland.

The 28-year-old center forward has struggled to get or stay on the pitch this season, playing in just four Premier League matches. In the League Cup, he showed against MK Dons why he can still be valuable, scoring two goals and adding two assists; however, he has no goals in Premier League play since an Aug. 9 substitute appearance—the first match day of the EPL season.

Long (ankle) remains out for the match against AFC Bournemouth.

Long has been progressing well, however he is not healthy enough to play this weekend, according to manager Ronald Koeman. The striker has appeared in four Premier League matches, scoring one goal on six shots this season. In his absence, Graziano Pellé should continue making starts up top for Southampton with fellow striker Jay Rodriguez seeing time.

Long will be sidelined for 2-to-4 weeks because of an ankle injury, manager Ronald Koeman said Thursday.

Long picked up the injury while on international duty, and while the ailment certainly doesn't help the Saints' depth, his fantasy value was somewhat limited given his inconsistent playing time.

Long came up big in Southampton's 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Sunday, scoring a late goal to tie the game after coming on in the 65th minute.

The Irishman could find himself pressed for regular minutes this season behind Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez, but he was still able to make an impact on the game when he was called upon. Long will likely find himself on the bench for next week's match versus Everton, despite Sunday's contribution.
