Alaba scored a penalty and had an assist as Austria narrowly beat Moldova 2-1 Thursday in European Championship Qualifying Group G.

Unlike in appearances for Bayern, Alaba started further upfield as a defensive midfielder and continued his excellent start to the season with a fine performance. Alaba converted a penalty after 14 minutes and then helped Austria re-gain the lead by assisting Marc Janko from a corner. Alaba also nearly scored a second in the first half but his free-kick was denied by Moldovan goalkeeper Ilie Sebanu. A vital player for both club and country, Alaba will surely play a key part again when Austria host Montenegro at the weekend.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Alaba registered his fifth straight league shutout and seventh in all competitions during Bayern Munich's 4-0 win over Hannover 96 on Saturday.

Bayern Munich have been excellent defensively and Alaba, with his spot in the starting XI locked in, has been a huge fantasy beneficiary.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Alaba picked up an abdominal muscle strain in training ahead of last Saturday's DFB Cup final against Borussia Dortmund and he is expected to miss four weeks, Bundesliga.com reports.

As a result of the injury, Alaba will miss upcoming friendlies for Austria against Iceland and the Czech Republic, although he is expected to be ready to participate in Bayern's pre-season tour, which begins July 9.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Alaba, who suffered a knee injury during training in Qatar on Sunday, should be fit for Bayern Munich's Bundesliga match against Borussia Monchengladbach, Bundesliga.com reports.

Alaba was briefly Bayern's penalty taker this season, but after a key miss, he was replaced by Thomas Muller, who had the job before him. The defender is a very important part of the Bayern defense, although his fantasy prospects are a bit limited to his clean sheet ability these days.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Alaba recorded two assists in Saturday's 4-0 win over Schalke.

The two assists were Alaba's first of the season and the clean sheet was his fourth. The defender has one goal in league play this season, although he did find the back of the net on a free kick in last Tuesday's Champions League match against CSKA Moscow.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Alaba had a penalty kick attempt blocked during Saturday's match against Nurnberg.

Alaba recently became Bayern's top penalty taker after Thomas Muller missed one earlier this season. With an inability to convert Saturday, manager Pep Guardiola may be looking elsewhere, which would vastly drop Alaba's fantasy value moving forward.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Bayern Munich are not yet planning any contract extension talks with Alaba, Goal.com reports.

Alaba is signed through the 2014-15 season, so a new contract is exactly necessary this moment. It looks like Bayern are simply waiting to see how things work out this year before committing any more capital to their defenseman.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Alaba is expected to take over penalty duties from Thomas Muller after the latter missed from the spot and the former connected from there during last Friday's 3-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, Goal.com reports.

Alaba scored five times last season for Bayern Munich, two of which came from the spot while Muller was on the bench. That number could surely rise this season if he does in fact take over, a great aspect from a fantasy perspective for a defensive player.
