Downing (knee) participated in first-team training Thursday and is expected to face Newcastle on Saturday, the club's official website reports.

Downing picked up the knee injury over the international break with England and was held out of last weekend's match against Everton. However, he looks poised to return and should be in the starting XI against a Newcastle side that has been fairly good defensively of late, but could be missing starting goalkeeper Tim Krul (knock).

After failing to take a shot in back-to-back matches, Downing has taken eight in his last two, though only one has made it on goal, and he has not registered an assist since Sept. 20 against Liverpool.

Despite the dry spell, Downing continues to be a very important player for West Ham, though he'll lose one of his favorite pass targets with Diafra Sakho sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Downing scored on a fine solo effort in West Ham's victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Downing cut in and curled a well-placed left-footed shot into the back of the net to give the Hammers a 2-0 advantage. The winger is locked into a starting role for West Ham and is already well on his way to topping his underwhelming totals (one goal and two assists in 29 league appearances) from 2013-14.

Downing scored from a free kick in the 44th minute of West Ham's 2-0 defeat of Tottenham on Saturday.

Downing has one goal and two assists on the season heading into the final match against his former club. The shine has certainly worn off since Downing's high priced move to Liverpool back in 2011, and the veteran winger can safely be ignored by fantasy owners heading into next year.

Downing assisted on Kevin Nolan's 46th minute goal in West Ham's 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Downing has had a disappointing season thus far after making the move from Liverpool to Upton Park. The Englishman likes to play a lot of crosses into the box, but doesn't end up on the scoresheet often enough to warrant much fantasy consideration.

Downing is expected to miss the next 10 weeks due to the Achilles injury he suffered during last Saturday's match against Liverpool, the Daily Mail reports.

This is a tough blow for the Hammers, who were banking of Downing being a part of keeping the club in the Premier League. Downing's injury came on a tough tackle from Jon Flanagan and the severity of the injury wasn't even known until he removed his sock at halftime, revealing a deep gash. 12 stitches were required to close the wound and now he'll likely not lace up his boots until March.

Downing continued to play through the remainder of the first half, but was substituted at halftime. He went to the hospital to have the injury assessed, and received 12 stitches.
