Downing had a very productive second season at West Ham, totaling six goals and a career-high eight assists in 37 league appearances.

The 30-year-old's involvement in 14 goals tied a career-high, as he benefited from the presence of new attacking additions Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia. After a 12th-place finish, Downing is likely to remain with the club, where he will hope to build on last season's success.

Downing took three shots, with one on goal, and sent in 10 crosses during Saturday's 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Downing has solid cumulative totals of five goals and eight assists in 29 Premier League appearances this season, but he's struggled of late, scoring just once goal and picking up two assists in 2015. The Hammers have been unable to maintain their spot for European contention, and they'll need Downing to pick it up quickly if they want to make a run of it.

Downing crossed the ball 11 times and notably ceded a breakaway to opponent Lazar Markovic after a failed back pass to keeper Adrian in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Liverpool.

Manager Sam Allardyce chose to play Kevin Nolan in the central role behind Andy Carroll and pushed Downing out wide. It was a head-scratching tactical move as Downing has flourished in that role all season.

Downing assisted on Andy Carroll's goal and provided seven total crosses in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Swansea City.

Downing did not have to work very hard for the assist, as Andy Carroll did all of the heavy lifting. Regardless, Downing continues to be the most important piece of the West Ham attack and shows little sign of slowing down.

Downing scored in the 56th minute of West Ham's 2-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday, his second goal in as many games.

Downing's two-game goal streak was preceded by back-to-back games with assists, as he continues to play a vital part of the Hammers' attack. With four goals and six assists in 16 matches this season, Downing is putting himself firmly in the upper-tier of fantasy midfielders, though he'll have a tough time extending his streak with a Boxing Day trip to Stamford Bridge up next.

Downing (knee) participated in first-team training Thursday and is expected to face Newcastle on Saturday, the club's official website reports.

Downing picked up the knee injury over the international break with England and was held out of last weekend's match against Everton. However, he looks poised to return and should be in the starting XI against a Newcastle side that has been fairly good defensively of late, but could be missing starting goalkeeper Tim Krul (knock).
