Rossi was left off the Italy 23-man squad for the World Cup, with Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne getting selected ahead of the New Jersey-born striker, ESPN FC reports.

Rossi missed four months during the Serie A season after suffering another right knee injury, but he appeared to prove his fitness since returning in early May. Rossi failed to make the 2010 squad as well, and it will likely be very difficult for him to make the 2018 World Cup when he will be 31.

Rossi scored Sunday in Fiorentina's 2-2 draw with Torino, giving him 16 for the season.

One has to remember that Rossi missed much of the second half of the season and was leading the league in scoring before he got hurt.

Rossi was named to the Italy 30-man preliminary World Cup roster Tuesday, Sky Sports reports.

Rossi was enjoying an exceptional season for Fiorentina before suffering a knee injury in early January. He returned to play in the final three matches of the season, scoring a goal against Sassuolo on May 6 for the 15th goal of the campaign. Rossi has seen his career ravaged by knee injuries, but it would surely be a high-mark if he's able to make it to Brazil.

Rossi came off the bench and scored in his first match since January in a 4-3 loss to Sassuolo.

Rossi, like Domenico Berardi, will be tough to leave at home if he is healthy to play in the World Cup.

Rossi (knee) is now expected to return to Fiorentina in two months, which means he could be fit for this summer's World Cup, reports. The club released a statement Wednesday that said "Rossi has recently completed a follow-up visit from knee surgeon specialist Richard Steadman. He has shown good stability of his recently injured knee. The player will continue his fitness rehabilitation, which we expect to take two months."

It's certainly great news for Italy's World Cup chances, although Fiorentina will remain without their oft-injured striker for quite a bit of the remaining portion of the Serie A season.

Additional tests on Rossi's injured right knee revealed "a stress to the anterior cruciate ligament perviously operated on," the Associated Press reports.

Fiorentina confirmed that the ACL is not torn, but the injury is worse than was initially diagnosed, which had originally given him a two month timetable for return. He is expected to have a two-to-three week break before additional tests are done, but it looks like Rossi will miss more than two months.
