Mertesacker was shown red in the 18th minute of Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The big German, who is not known as the swiftest center back in the Premier League, was caught a bit out of position and denied Diego Costa a clear scoring chance, leaving the referee no choice but to show him red. While there wasn't as much contact as Costa led on, few could argue with the decision to send him off. Given the play wasn't overly violent, Mertesacker will only be suspended for one match, which he will serve during Saturday's FA Cup match against Burley, allowing him to not miss any Premier League time.

Mertesacker won a tackle and made one interception in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Stoke.

The lanky defender did little in the way of generating fantasy points Sunday, but his sound positional play helped the Gunners secure their 11th clean sheet in the league this season. Despite the prevalence of the clean sheets, Mertesacker is nearly completely reliant on them to make a fantasy impact, making him a dart throw of a play next week versus Chelsea.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mertesacker (illness) was left off the 18-man roster for Saturday's game against Chelsea.

Mertesacker has been held out by an illness for a month and his inability to play Saturday is not all that surprising despite the slight glimmer of hope he'd make his long-awaited return against Chelsea. He'll wait another week while Gabriel continues to fulfill starting duties.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mertesacker (illness) is questionable for Saturday's match against Chelsea.

Mertesacker has missed nearly a month due to the ailment, and with Gabriel playing well in his absence, it's unclear if he will slot back into his starting spot alongside Laurent Koscielny if he is deemed fit.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mertesacker is back in training after missing 18 days due to an illness, and he could be available for Saturday's game against Stoke City.

Gabriel has played very well in Mertesacker's absence, so it's unclear if the German will be able to slot right back into the starting lineup alongside Laurent Koscielny, who has been battling back soreness of late.
