Shawcross (back) could feature for Stoke's U-21 side next month. "The good news is that Ryan is progressing well and hopefully, in the next few weeks, he will get some game time at development level," manager Mark Hughes said.

Hughes has suffered through a long-term back injury, which was further exacerbated earlier in the year and required surgery. Hughes' return to the Potters' lineup would be a huge boost to a back line that could use reinforcements.

Shawcross will be sidelined for at least two months because of back surgery, the BBC reports.

Shawcross has really struggled to train during the preseason and he finally visited a specialist this week to help determine the cause of his back pain. With Shawcross out, some combination of Philipp Wollscheid, Marc Wilson and Marc Muniesa will center the back line, though Geoff Cameron can also play there.

Shawcross will visit a specialist Tuesday to help determine if he needs surgery on his injured back, the Stoke Sentinel reports.

Shawcross has been a minimal participant in preseason training due to the ailment, including sitting out their latest friendly against Porto in Cologne on Sunday. Shawcross will be a significant long shot to play in the Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday, and it's possible surgery could sideline him for much longer.

Shawcross is starting Saturday against Burnley despite being a doubt with a knee injury.

Shawcross picked up the injury during training Tuesday, and manager Mark Hughes made a point to say that he would give Shawcross as much time as possible to prove his fitness. It's a solid matchup against a Burnley side that has really struggled to score recently.

Shawcross is likely to miss Saturday's match against Burnley after injuring his knee in training Tuesday, the Stoke Sentinel reports.

Manager Mark Hughes indicated that Shawcross will get a chance to prove his fitness, but he was hardly optimistic that he would be able to play. If he sits, Marc Wilson and Philipp Wollscheid are the possible replacements to partner with Marc Muniesa.

Shawcross (back) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Hull City, with manager Mark Hughes failing to clarify when Shawcross could return.

Given the quick turnaround, it seems highly unlikely Shawcross will be able to play Wednesday against Everton, and it's unclear if he'll be able to get back by March 14 against West Brom.

Shawcross has an inflamed disc in his back, and he will be sidelined for at least 2-to-3 more weeks, manager Mark Hughes said Friday.

Shawcross' absence comes at a tough time for Stoke, as they sold Robert Huth just before he came down with the inflammation.
