Whelan could miss Sunday's match against Liverpool because of back spasms, the Stoke Sentinel reports.

Whelan has been unable to train this week due to the ailment, and while he's been a solid starter this season, the return of Xherdan Shaqiri (thigh) will help ease the blow.

Whelan had one assist and one shot attempt in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Swansea City.

This attacking output was a rare occurrence for the Stoke captain, as the assist marked his first of the season and his shot was just his seventh attempt all year. If you're starting Whelan at center back, you're doing it for the consistency of tackles, clean sheets, and above all, minutes. Despite Saturday's assist by Whelan, he remains a high-floor, low-ceiling defensive option.

Whelan returned from international duty, but according to manager Mark Huges, he is "struggling a bit."

Whelan has featured in every league match for Stoke City this season, so not having him could be a problem, especially with Xherdan Shaqiri also missing out. Ibrahim Afellay and Giannelli Imbula should draw starts in the Stoke midfield along with Marko Arnautovic.

Whelan is facing his 300th Stoke City first-team appearance on Saturday versus Southampton, according to Stoke Sentinel.

Whelan was signed by Stoke in Jan 2008 and has been an invaluable piece of the team for eight seasons now. And while he has 29 Premier League starts already this season, playing as a defensive midfielder with no goals or assists and with five yellow cards limits his fantasy value significantly.

Whelan (calf) will be a game time decision on Monday versus Everton.

The Irish was withdrawn at half-time against the Red Devils on Boxing Day with complaints of a knock. If he's unable to start Charlie Adam or Marco van Ginkel, who replaced Whelan, will slot in the vacant holding midfielder spot. None of the three is a major fantasy factor, though, as they play as holding midfielders.

Whelan picked up two yellow cards during Thursday's match against Newcastle.

Both came in the first half, which started the cavalcade of difficulties for Stoke, who saw Marc Wilson sent off just three minutes after Whelan was tossed. It comes at a very difficult time for Stoke, who will play Tottenham this Sunday.

Whelan was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in Stoke's preseason friendly against Orlando City, The Sun reports.

Whelan was originally booked for physical play, but received another yellow after going nose-to-nose with an Orlando player as they disputed the incident. The Potters were forced to finish the match with 10 men, winning 1-0 nonetheless. Whelan was reportedly victim to a card-happy referee and Stoke manager Tony Pulis hopes that the sending off will be the extent of Whelan's punishment, saying, "Hopefully nothing will come of Glennís red card. Itís a friendly and Iíd be disappointed if any further action was taken."
