Puyol has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to void the final two years of his contract, allowing him to leave the club this summer, Sky Sports reports.

Puyol has been with the first team since 1999, but has suffered through numerous injuries, including eight to his knees alone. He has recently been linked to a possible move to MLS, but it's tough to see many teams taking the risk given his injury history.

Puyol (knee) participated in training Monday and is targeting Saturday's Liga match against Osasuna for his return, Goal.com reports.

There is no guarantee that Puyol will lace up his boots for Saturday's match, as the club could hold him out until the following week for its Champions League match against AC Milan. Whichever they decided, it's great to hear that he's almost back on the pitch after missing out since last June.

Puyol is reportedly targeting a return to the pitch for Barca's first Liga match after the international break, which comes against Osasuna on October 19, according to Football Espana.

Puyol has been out since June after having to have a Baker's cyst removed from his knee. The Barca defender has had six surgeries during his professional career but this latest one clearly wasn't going to finish his time on the pitch. He's been working his way back and finally looks close to a return. It would be understandable if Barca limited his minutes early on, if not for the rest of the season.

Puyol returned to training Wednesday as he continues to work his way back from knee surgery in June to remove a Baker's cyst, Sky Sports reports.

Puyol has had six surgeries during his professional career and the 35-year old is clearly on the downside of his career. Regardless, it's great to see him back in training and he's aiming to return to Barcelona as soon as possible; when that actually happens is still quite cloudy.

Puyol left Barcelona's 5-0 victory, complaining of dizziness after clashing heads early in the first half.

His injury record leaves you scared for the future, but it seemed like just a precaution for Puyol to be subbed out of the game with the big match-up against Real Madrid looming next weekend.
