Lingard has been ruled out of Sunday's match against Sunderland due to a knee injury he suffered during last Saturday's match against Swansea.

Lingard made his competitive league debut last weekend for United, but barely lasted 20 minutes before having to be taken off with the injury. He was seen this week in a knee brace while using crutches, and it could be awhile before he's fit again.

Lingard was seen leaving a hospital on crutches Sunday after being forced off from Saturday's match against Swansea with a leg injury, the Daily Express reports.

United have not announced what the injury is, but Lingard's knee was in a brace as he walked with crutches out of the hospital. Lingard appears unlikely to play Sunday against Sunderland, with Adnan Januzaj, who replaced him against Swansea, in line for a start.

Lingard picked up a knock midway through the first half of Manchester United's Premier League opener against Swansea City and he was replaced by Adnan Januzaj in the 24th minute.

Lingard was making his first competitive Premier League appearance and while he was able to play for a few minutes after a 50-50 tackle with Swansea's Ashley Williams, manager Louis van Gaal decided to go with the fitter legs of Januzaj.

Birmingham is hopeful of extending Lingard's loan agreement after the player turned in a stunning four-goal performance Wednesday against Sheffield, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Lingard is on a one-month loan to the side, and netted a hat trick within 14 minutes in Wednesday's match. He impressed during the summer, and is clearly continuing to prove his value.

Lingard hit the goal twice in Manchester United's 5-1 win over Australia's A-League All-Star team.

Lingard was spot on for the entire match. He progressed through United's youth academy, and spent some time on loan last season at Leicester City. Manager David Moyes selected him for the summer tour, and his performance in this match could ensure that we see him more often this year.
