Costa was officially charged by the FA with violent conduct after stomping on Liverpool's Emre Can during Tuesday's Capital One Cup. Costa has until Thursday night to appeal the charge, which could see him suspended for three games.

Costa was involved in another incident during the match with Martin Skrtel, but the FA cleared him of violent conduct there. If he doesn't appeal, or loses it, he'll miss Premier League matches against Manchester City on Saturday, Aston Villa on Feb. 7 and Everton on Feb. 11.

Costa had two goals and an assist during Chelsea's 5-0 rout of Swansea City on Saturday. He scored his goals on three shots, while also adding three key passes and two dribbles on 45 touches.

Costa increased his Premier League lead in goals, as he's now netted 17 times, three more than Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, in 19 games. Coincidentally, Chelsea's next Premier League match will come against City, who they will host at Stamford Bridge on Jan. 31.

Costa scored his 15th goal of the season during Chelsea's 2-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday.

Costa finished with three shots, all of which landed on goal, to put him one goal ahead of Manchester City's Sergio Aguero for the Premier League lead in goals. Up next is a trip to face a Swansea City side that has allowed fewer home goals than all but Chelsea, Manchester United and Southampton this season.

Costa picked up an assist on John Terry's 31st-minute goal and then scored his own in the 62nd minute of Chelsea's 2-0 win over West Ham on Boxing Day.

Costa headed a corner toward goal that looked to be heading in, only for Terry to smash it over the line, giving Costa his first assist of the season. His goal was No. 13 on the year, putting him just one behind league-leader Sergio Aguero of Manchester City. Costa now has goals in two of his last three starts, though it wouldn't be surprising if he sat Sunday against Southampton given the condensed holiday schedule and his battle for fitness throughout the season.

Costa scored in the 68th minute of Chelsea's 2-0 win over Hull City on Saturday, his 12th goal in 13 Premier League appearances this season.

Costa snapped a four-game goalless streak, his longest of the season. Manager Jose Mourinho commented recently that Costa was not up to full fitness and needed to play more to get there, and his goal Saturday surely looks like he's getting back. Up next is a Dec. 22 match at Stoke City.

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed Tuesday that Costa will start Wednesday's Champions League match against Sporting CP.

Mourinho recently stated that he hoped Costa could improve his fitness, something he's attributed to his lack of scoring recently. With Chelsea already wrapping up the top spot in the group, Costa is highly unlikely to play 90 minutes ahead of Saturday's Premier League match against Hull City.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has asked Costa to improve his fitness in order to end his goalless streak after scoring twice in the last seven matches, reports the Daily Mail.

Costa scored seven goals in his first four games for Chelsea, but has since dealt with hamstring problems. He is not the leading scorer in the league anymore, and the team lost to Newcastle on Saturday.

Costa, who was suspended for Wednesday's match against Tottenham due to yellow-card accumulation, will start Saturday against Newcastle, manager Jose Mourinho confirmed Friday.

Costa was likely to be rested for one of the three games Chelsea will play in eight days, so the suspension was almost helpful in that respect. He will head into Sunday's match second in the Premier League with 11 goals in 11 matches.
