Mustafi won two tackles, secured seven interceptions and scored the opening goal of Sunday's 2-0 win over the Ukraine.

Starting in place of the injured Mats Hummels, Mustafi made the most of his opportunity, nodding home a free-kick in the first half and helping the reigning World champions to a clean sheet in the opener. Mustafi could head to the bench once Hummels returns, but he is also a capable fullback and could displace Benedikt Howedes from the right flank if manager Joachim Low elects to keep him in the starging XI.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Mustafi was named to the Germany 23-man World Cup squad in place of Marco Reus, who was ruled out with an ankle injury, The Guardian reports.

Mustafi was a bit of a surprise given that he's a defender and Reus is a midfielder, although coach Joachim Low referenced the talent he has in midfield, such as Lukas Podolski, Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, and Toni Kroos, among others. Mustafi barely missed out on the roster the first time, so it's not a big surprise that he has now made it.
