Kaboul was unable to return from his hamstring injury Saturday against Liverpool after suffering a groin injury in training Friday, according to Chris Young of the Sunderland Echo.

The latest ailment is not considered serious, but given that Kaboul has already missed two months with the hamstring injury, the club will ensure he's fully fit before considering him for next weekend's match against Manchester United.

Kaboul (hamstring) is not in the 18-man squad to face Liverpool on Saturday.

Kaboul was expected to return from his two-month layoff, but he is apparently not quite fit enough to even make the bench. John O'Shea and Jan Kirchhoff will start in central defense at Anfield.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Kaboul (hamstring) is likely to return after a two-month layoff with a hamstring injury against Liverpool on Saturday.

The former Spurs center back was a big coup for the Black Cats over the summer, but a variety of injuries have limited the 30-year-old to just 13 matches across all comps this season. He should slide right back into the starting XI if he can go, which seems highly likely.

Kaboul will be out a indefinitely because of a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman was able to complete last week's match versus Chelsea despite suffering the injury, but he will miss what manager Sam Allerdyce alluded to as "a number of weeks" as he recovers. Billy Jones stepped into the back line when Kaboul missed the Dec. 12 match versus Chelsea because of an illness, and he will likely continue to see minutes during his latest absence, although the Sunderland lineup tends to fluctuate from week to week.

Kaboul (illness) is starting Saturday against Chelsea.

Kaboul was absent from last weekend's match due to the ailment, but he'll slot back into the starting lineup alongside Sebastian Coates against a Chelsea side in disarray following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Kaboul is likely to return for this weekend's match versus Chelsea after missing Saturday's match versus Watford due to an illness, Chronicle Live reports.

The Frenchman's absence was missed Saturday, as a makeshift Sunderland back line had to contend with the dangerous duo of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney in a narrow loss, but all signs point to a swift return. Kaboul's presence will be equally important this weekend, as the Black Cats travel to take on the reigning Premier League champions.

Kaboul (groin) has returned to fitness ahead of Saturday's fixture against Southampton.

Kaboul and the rest of the Black Cats back line has been shaky at best this season. However, they've been better with him in the lineup than without, conceding six times to Everton last weekend without him in the squad. The former Spurs stalwart isn't much of a fantasy option due to the poor quality of players around him and his reluctance to score goals or create assists too often, notching just one in eight matches this season.
