Altidore saw some substitute time in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Monday.

Speculation continues to mount that Altidore will be leaving Sunderland during the January transfer window, with Ligue 1 side Lille often mentioned, while his agent has speculated interest from Italy and Germany. Based on his playing time this season, Altidore's best chance for more action would be to leave Sunderland.

Altidore said he may leave Sunderland in January if he is unable to overcome his current struggles, reports Sky Sports.

The American is focused on being active in games and scoring goals to continue to hold his spot with the United States' national team. He said if his situation isn't improved by January that he would be looking elsewhere.

Altidore came on for Adam Johnson in the 67th minute of Sunderland's scoreless draw with Burnley on Saturday, but he did not record a single shot.

Altidore has been used very sparingly this season, as Connor Wickham has dominated the starts up front in Premier League play. While Steven Fletcher is dealing with a calf injury, Altidore doesn't figure to get much playing time as long as Wickham is fit.

Altidore, who came on in the 81st minute of Sunderland's Premier League opener against West Brom last Saturday, is nearing full fitness following a severe hamstring injury suffered during the World Cup, but he remains behind Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham on the depth chart, the Sunderland Echo reports.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said Altidore is in good spirits, and appears to be happier now than he's ever been at Sunderland, although that isn't saying much after last season's colossal disappointment when Altidore netted just one Premier League goal.

Altidore (hamstring) will make his preseason debut against Udinese on Saturday, the Daily Mail reports.

Altidore had a disappointing season with Sunderland last year as he was only able to score one goal. Despite the hamstring injury, he'll try to fight for a spot in the starting XI during Sunderland's final friendly Saturday.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Altidore has yet to appear in a preseason match and appears unlikely to feature in the starting XI for Sunderland to start the new campaign.

The hamstring injury suffered in the World Cup seems to be hampering and holding Altidore back. After a borderline dreadful season for Sunderland last year, Altidore looks to bounce back and prove he has what it takes to play in the Premier League.

Altidore suffered a Grade 2 hamstring tear in the United States' opening match of the World Cup, and despite being deemed "available to play" by coach Jurgen Klinsmann, he was unable to go in Tuesday's loss to Belgium in the Round of 16, ESPN FC reports.

Clearly Klinsmann's comments were a smokescreen, as the Americans could have desperately used Altidore's skills near the goal, but he was not close to being able to contribute. While he was unable to participate again in the World Cup, Altidore is expected to be fully healthy for the start of the upcoming Premier League season.

Altidore (hamstring) will be available for the United States in their Round of 16 World Cup match against Belgium on Tuesday, US Soccer announced.

Altidore suffered a hamstring injury in the Americans' first game in Brazil, then sat out the remainder of the group stage. It appears he is still not 100 percent, as he's only fully trained once, but he can make an impact any time he's on the field. There has not been an announcement about whether or not he will start, but if he's available, he will likely see some time on the pitch.
