Altidore signed with Toronto FC on Friday as a designated player after transferring from EPL side Sunderland. Jermain Defoe was sent to Sunderland as part of the transaction.

Altidore returns to MLS after playing for Villarreal, Xerez (on loan), Hull City (on loan), Bursaspor (on loan), AZ Alkmaar and Sunderland, an impressive haul of stops for a player who is only 25 years old. After scoring 39 times in 67 appearances for AZ, Altidore scored just once in 42 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats, most of the bench of late due to his scoring struggles. He'll try to get back in form for the Reds, who have an intriguing combination of Altidore and Michael Bradley.

Altidore is expected to join MLS side Toronto FC in a player swap that has Jermain Defoe heading back to Sunderland, TSN reports.

Altidore has been a colossal disappointment for the Black Cats, scoring just one Premier League goal in a season-and-a-half. He was linked to a few different MLS clubs, and it's still not guaranteed to be Toronto given MLS' ability to essentially place US stars on certain clubs, but at the very least, it appears Altidore's Premier League days are over.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Altidore got a rare start Saturday and didn't record a shot in the 0-0 draw to Liverpool.

The nightmare in England continues for Altidore and in his first real opportunity, he failed to showed any promise. With a shotless performance, it's unlikely he'll get another start as it appeared just to be a rest day for Steven Fletcher after a three game week. We'll see if he gets any substitute time next weekend against West Ham.

Altidore played 28 minutes off the bench during Sunderland's scoreless draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

Altidore is in a tough spot with speculation of him moving along in the winter transfer window along with getting very limited playing time. He took two shots, with one landing on goal, though he remains a very limited fantasy option given the minuscule playing time.

Altidore saw some substitute time in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Monday.

Speculation continues to mount that Altidore will be leaving Sunderland during the January transfer window, with Ligue 1 side Lille often mentioned, while his agent has speculated interest from Italy and Germany. Based on his playing time this season, Altidore's best chance for more action would be to leave Sunderland.

Altidore said he may leave Sunderland in January if he is unable to overcome his current struggles, reports Sky Sports.

The American is focused on being active in games and scoring goals to continue to hold his spot with the United States' national team. He said if his situation isn't improved by January that he would be looking elsewhere.

Altidore came on for Adam Johnson in the 67th minute of Sunderland's scoreless draw with Burnley on Saturday, but he did not record a single shot.

Altidore has been used very sparingly this season, as Connor Wickham has dominated the starts up front in Premier League play. While Steven Fletcher is dealing with a calf injury, Altidore doesn't figure to get much playing time as long as Wickham is fit.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Altidore, who came on in the 81st minute of Sunderland's Premier League opener against West Brom last Saturday, is nearing full fitness following a severe hamstring injury suffered during the World Cup, but he remains behind Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham on the depth chart, the Sunderland Echo reports.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said Altidore is in good spirits, and appears to be happier now than he's ever been at Sunderland, although that isn't saying much after last season's colossal disappointment when Altidore netted just one Premier League goal.
