Altidore suffered a Grade 2 hamstring tear in the United States' opening match of the World Cup, and despite being deemed "available to play" by coach Jurgen Klinsmann, he was unable to go in Tuesday's loss to Belgium in the Round of 16, ESPN FC reports.

Clearly Klinsmann's comments were a smokescreen, as the Americans could have desperately used Altidore's skills near the goal, but he was not close to being able to contribute. While he was unable to participate again in the World Cup, Altidore is expected to be fully healthy for the start of the upcoming Premier League season.

Altidore (hamstring) will be available for the United States in their Round of 16 World Cup match against Belgium on Tuesday, US Soccer announced.

Altidore suffered a hamstring injury in the Americans' first game in Brazil, then sat out the remainder of the group stage. It appears he is still not 100 percent, as he's only fully trained once, but he can make an impact any time he's on the field. There has not been an announcement about whether or not he will start, but if he's available, he will likely see some time on the pitch.

Altidore's (hamstring) status was updated on Thursday by manager Jurgen Klinsmann, who said, "We are very optimistic" about his availability for Tuesday's Round of 16 match against Belgium, the Washington Post reports.

Altidore has missed the United States' past two contests after straining his hamstring in America's triumphant World Cup opener versus Ghana. While he's sat out, Clint Dempsey has been left to lead the line by himself, producing mixed results. That could very well change if Altidore is indeed able to return for Tuesday's knockout round clash with Belgium, an encouraging possibility for the US attack.

Team USA hasn't ruled him out for the rest of the tournament, but he may not return until late in the knockout stage if the USA advances that far.

Altidore (hamstring) has been ruled out for the United States' World Cup match against Portugal on Sunday, USA Today reports.

Altidore suffered the injury in the first half against Ghana on Monday, and while there was some small hope that he would be fit to face Portugal, it was a long-shot at best. His next opportunity to play will come next Thursday against Germany.

Altidore suffered what appeared to be a hamstring injury in the 20th minute of the USA's World Cup opener against Ghana on Monday.

Altidore was stretchered off the field and replaced by Aron Johannsson. He'll have to undergo a number of tests to determine the severity of the injury, but the United States could be without a vital part of their attack for the rest of the World Cup.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Altidore had only one goal and one assist in 31 games for Sunderland this season.

The worst part for Altidore is that he only had 29 shots in his 31 games. Granted, being a striker for Sunderland is tough and he did not see 90 minutes regularly all season. It seems as though Altidore's time at Sunderland will be short lived and it will be interesting to see where the American ends up playing next season. He'll surely want to play for a side where he can be the main striker and play 90 minutes on a regular basis. His World Cup form may help him to find a home in the summer transfer window.
