Pepe was assessed a red card in Portugal's World Cup opener against Germany on Monday and he will miss their match against the United States on Sunday.

Fabio Coentrao left the match with an apparent groin injury, leaving Portugual very vulnerable in the back. Pepe was given the red card after he headbutted Thomas Muller, who he felt overreacted to contact while both were going after a ball. It was a reaction many fans have come to expect from Pepe, but it was still very surprising to see on such a big stage. He'll be eligible to return June 26 against Ghana, but it could be too late by then for Portugal.
