Announces retirement
Chiellini has announced his retirement from football after losing in the MLS Cup final to Columbus 2-1, ending his 23 year professional career.
ANALYSIS
Chiellini has been one of the best Italian defenders in history and will retire with long list of trophies. He began his career with Livorno and Roma before making the jump Juventus, where he spent 17 seasons in Torino. Chiellini made 425 appearances from 2004-2022, while winning nine Serie A titles, five Coppa Italia cups, and was a two-time runner up in the UEFA Champions League. He decided to end his two years playing in the MLS for LAFC, where he won the MLS Cup during his first season, while also winning the Supporters Shield. With the national team, Chiellini played for the Italian national team for 18 years. However, the defender was left off the 2006 World Cup roster that saw Italy gain their fourth star, but shortly after began to be regular starter in 2007. He led the team to Euro Championship in 2020 while taking bronze in both the Confederations Cup in 2013 and the UEFA nations Cup in 2021.
