Lampard officially joined New York City FC of Major League Soccer on Thursday after signing a designated player contract.

Lampard moves on a free transfer from Chelsea, who decided after last season to let their all-time leading goal scorer leave. Lampard's best days are behind him, but he's still a capable scorer from the midfield and he'll be a vital piece of the NYC FC attack along with former Barcelona striker David Villa, who was the club's first signing earlier this year.

Lampard is expected to complete his move to MLS side New York City FC on Thursday, ESPN FC reports.

Lampard will join former Barcelona star David Villa with the expansion club set to begin play in 2015. Lampard was unable to come to a new agreement with Chelsea, where he spent the last 13 years of his career, leaving as the club's all-time leader scorer with 211 goals. He will come in as one of the highest-profile players in Major League Soccer with plenty still left in the tank.

Lampard, who did not play in both of England's losses so far in the World Cup, is expected to start and captain the team Tuesday against Costa Rica, the BBC reports.

Lampard could be making his final appearance for England on Tuesday, which would mark his 106th cap. England have already been eliminated from the knockout stage, but Costa Rica need just a draw to win Group D. It will be a summer of finals for Lampard, who is also expected to leave Chelsea after 429 appearances.

Lampard has reportedly agree to a free transfer to MLS-side NYCFC, the Daily Mirror reports.

Atletico Madrid forward David Villa is also believed to be joining NYCFC, who will begin playing in the spring of 2015. Lampard was out of contract with Chelsea, who were not interested in bringing him back at his 150,000-per-week salary. He is Chelsea's all-time leading scorer with 211 goals, and he will certainly be one of the better players in the U.S. league.

Lampard was officially released by Chelsea on Friday, reports.

There is still a possibility that Lampard will return to Stamford Bridge, although it's a little surprising the two sides couldn't come to terms before Friday. His role has been minimized this season due to a number of midfield additions, but Lampard has made it clear that he isn't ready to hang up his boots quite yet.
