Schmitt opened 2024 in the minors and never received consistent opportunities with the Giants, but he performed well at the plate when called upon with six homers and a .760 OPS in 40 games. He also enjoyed a strong campaign at Triple-A Sacramento, where he had 13 home runs, 11 steals and a .271/.340/.466 slash line in 74 contests. He saw action at second base, third base and shortstop, but all three positions are locked down after San Francisco signed Willy Adames in December. Schmitt had nearly half of the Giants' 10 hits, as well as their lone extra-base knock. The infielder got a look in the two hole Tuesday -- the first time he's batted higher than fifth all season. He's started August 11-for-36 (.306), but it's unclear if the lineup shuffle will stick. Schmitt has a .254/.322/.413 slash line with seven home runs, 24 RBI, 20 runs scored, nine doubles and no stolen bases across 209 plate appearances this season.

A second-round pick in 2020, Schmitt was called up for the first time in May as a replacement for Brandon Crawford. Schmitt ended up bouncing between shortstop (42 games), third base (35 games) and second base (19 games), mostly struggling at the plate until the final day of the season when he hit two home runs. He spent some time back at Triple-A in August and September as the team tried to spark the offense later in the year. Among the 328 big leaguers to see 250-plus plate appearances last season, Schmitt ranked 11th worst by wRC+ (59). While he ended the season on a brief high note, Schmitt is not a lock to start the 2024 season with a regular role. His minor-league track record suggests there may be something here, but most will need to see more before rostering him on a fantasy team.
