Looks healthy for spring
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns implied Monday that Adams (ankle) is fully healthy ahead of spring training, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Stearns noted that lefty David Peterson (hip), infielder Ronny Mauricio (knee) and right-hander Kyle Crick (calf) are the only players who will be held out of drills to begin camp, which suggests that Adams won't face any restrictions after he missed the final two months of the 2023 season due to a fractured right ankle. The 32-year-old spent last season with the Diamondbacks, finishing with a 5.71 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 22:8 K:BB in 17.1 innings. Adams signed with the Mets in November but was moved off the 40-man roster earlier this month, so he'll likely face an uphill battle to win a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.

To say Adams had a strange season in 2021 would be an understatement. He was brilliant in certain categories, as his .164 xBA, 0.17 HR/9, 24.5% hard hit percentage and 13.0 K/9 all ranked near the top of the league among qualified relievers. However, his slider (87% pitch%) often didn't find the plate, leading to a 6.0 BB/9 that was sixth-worst among relievers while setting the live-ball era single-season record with 24 HBPs. There was also a stark contrast in Adams' home and road splits. He was outstanding at Petco Park, firing a 0.37 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 15.9 K/9 at home versus a 7.39 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 on the road. The potential is there for Adams to become an elite closer if learns how to harness his control. Until then, he'll continue to be part of the bridge to whomever closes in San Diego, as he's under team control for three more seasons.
