Josh VanMeter
26-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
2021 Fantasy Outlook
The Triple-A juiced ball in 2019 propelled VanMeter from obscurity to the major-league lineup; he hit 13 HR in his first 29 games with Louisville that year. He had some nice moments as a rookie with the Reds but also some brutal ones, particularly in the outfield. He does not do any one thing particularly well offensively and the Reds ran out of patience after VanMeter got off to a 2-for-34 start to 2020, with 16 strikeouts. He was flipped to the Diamondbacks along with Stuart Fairchild in exchange for Archie Bradley, and while VanMeter played a little better after the change of scenery, he was still well below league average with the bat. VanMeter is not a pedigree guy and will be on a short leash in a utility role with Arizona if he's even on the roster to begin 2021. Read Past Outlooks

Seeing regular work at keystone
2BArizona Diamondbacks
May 2, 2021
VanMeter will start at second base and bat second Sunday against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
VanMeter will be picking up his fourth start in a row Sunday, and he looks like he could be in store for regular playing time at the keystone until Arizona gets at least one of Christian Walker (oblique), Tim Locastro (finger), Ketel Marte (hamstring) or Kole Calhoun (hamstring) back from the injured list. The 26-year-old has yet to take advantage of the added playing time thus far, going 0-for-10 over his first three starts.

Stat Review
How does Josh VanMeter compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K

  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA

2020 Fantasy Outlook
VanMeter rose from obscurity and debuted with the Reds in early May after hitting 13 home runs in 29 games with Triple-A Louisville to begin 2019. He was used mostly off the bench initially and ended up riding the shuttle before settling in with the big club for good after the All-Star break. While most of his time came in left field, VanMeter also logged starts at four other positions: first base, second, third and right field. He was much better at home and versus opposite-handed pitching, batting just .186 outside of Great American Ball Park and .125 without the platoon edge. The overall numbers cratered in September, and while some of that may have been due to poor batted-ball luck (.174 BABIP), it left the front office looking for an upgrade at what projected to be VanMeter's position in second base. They found one in Mike Moustakas, leaving VanMeter to compete for a utility role this spring.
