Josh VanMeter
25-Year-Old OutfielderOF
2020 Fantasy Outlook
VanMeter rose from obscurity and debuted with the Reds in early May after hitting 13 home runs in 29 games with Triple-A Louisville to begin 2019. He was used mostly off the bench initially and ended up riding the shuttle before settling in with the big club for good after the All-Star break. While most of his time came in left field, VanMeter also logged starts at four other positions: first base, second, third and right field. He was much better at home and versus opposite-handed pitching, batting just .186 outside of Great American Ball Park and .125 without the platoon edge. The overall numbers cratered in September, and while some of that may have been due to poor batted-ball luck (.174 BABIP), it left the front office looking for an upgrade at what projected to be VanMeter's position in second base. They found one in Mike Moustakas, leaving VanMeter to compete for a utility role this spring. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
VanMeter was optioned on Thursday but is back in the big leagues after a very brief absence. The utility man has accomplished very little so far this season, going hitless with seven strikeouts in 14 at-bats. Pedro Strop (groin) landed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

How does Josh VanMeter compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
