Thairo Estrada

26-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
San Francisco Giants
2022 Fantasy Outlook
With Tommy La Stella (Achilles surgery) still on the mend to open 2022, Estrada has a chance to see regular playing time early in the season. The 26-year-old middle infielder won the starting job at second base over Mauricio Dubon in spring training, though it's likely to just be a temporary everyday role. Estrada was solid with a .273/.333/.479 slash line in 132 plate appearances last season at the major-league level. He also tore up Triple-A with a .333/.399/.538 line in 233 plate appearances with Sacramento. The playing time should be there even when the Giants are fully healthy -- manager Gabe Kapler often utilizes platoons, and Estrada's ability to move around the infield should open up more opportunities for him, though the right-handed hitter will likely be on the short side of a timeshare if he ends up in one. Estrada will start at second base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Tommy La Stella (Achilles) returning from the 10-day injured list earlier this week, the Giants were back at full strength in the infield for the first time all season. La Stella is eventually expected to settle in as the Giants' primary starter at second base against right-handed pitching, but since he was deployed as a designated hitter in his first two games back from the IL, Estrada has been able stick at the keystone throughout the series in Colorado. He'll look to stay hot in the series finale Wednesday after producing four hits, two RBI and a run between the first two contests at Coors Field.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
A diminutive middle infielder from Venezuela, Estrada held his own in his first year of full-season ball. Estrada slashed .290/.346/.391 in 118 games between Low-A and High-A. The 20-year-old showed some surprising pop despite standing at just 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, cranking eight home runs and driving in 49 runs. Home run power is not expected to be a consistent part of his offensive skill set, though. Estrada's above-average speed was on display, as he swiped 18 bases in 2016. A contact hitter, Estrada may be hurt by the bevy of shortstops and second basemen ahead of him in the Yankees' system, although he has shown the ability to play multiple positions on the diamond. He will likely return to High-A to begin the 2017 season.
