We have two goals for this article:
1. Identify likely free agents and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.
2. Estimate how much of your $100 starting free-agent budget you should bid on them.
Bids in general are best guesstimates. With so much uncertainty at least initially, those values may be even greater estimates than usual. The FAAB chart below lets users easily see at a glance how certain players stack up against others and how much they should command in a variety of formats.
The chart, which is sortable by column (click on the header), include a very basic "player grade" column. This is a reflection of a player's skills and role on an A-E scale. An "A" grade is reserved for a high-impact prospect stepping into an everyday role.
If you have questions on players, I'm happy to provide my thoughts in the comments or via email to [email protected].

STARTING PITCHER
Javier Assad, Cubs: Assad, profiled the last few weeks, continues to work his way through his rehab assignment. He tossed 4.1 innings Wednesday for Triple-A Iowa, his longest outing to date. Though Assad still appears more likely to work in long relief or stick around in Iowa's rotation once he's activated from the 60-day injured list, he could be needed to make starts with the Cubs if he comes back before Jameson Taillon (calf) and Michael Soroka (shoulder). 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same injury return starting bid)
Paul Blackburn, Mets: Blackburn, sidelined since early July with a right shoulder impingement, made what could be his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday where he threw 97 pitches over 5.2 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three. Prior to that outing, he posted a 2.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB in 20.1 innings across four rehab appearances. The Mets aren't yet ready to remove Frankie Montas from the rotation, but another poor/short outing like Saturday could change their minds and open the door for Blackburn. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (upcoming injury return bid)
Nestor Cortes, Padres: Cortes, diagnosed with a left elbow flexor strain and placed on the IL Apr. 6, returned to action this week. He's here again as some leagues require a player to be active before being eligible for bidding. Cortes gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while fanning three through 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Arizona on Wednesday. That came after he proved his health over a four-start July rehab assignment where he turned in a 1.00 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB from 18 innings. Cortes should remain in the rotation moving forward, even with the upcoming return of Michael King. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (same injury bid based on him starting)
Tylor Megill, Mets: Megill, on the IL since June 17 with a sprained right elbow, threw 22 pitches in a live batting practice session last Sunday at Citi Field. The right-hander was to complete another two-inning simulated live BP Thursday and perhaps another simulated game before the Mets map out a minor-league rehab assignment. They'll presumably let Megill get stretched out for a starting role, yet it's unclear if there will be a spot available by the time he's eligible for activation by the middle of August. But with Frankie Montas struggling and the club needing depth, Megill could get a look if they doesn't insert Paul Blackburn or one of Nolan McLean/Brandon Sproat. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (early injury return bid)
Nolan McLean/Brandon Sproat, Mets: I ran this two weeks ago and what I wrote then is even more accurate now with the Mets struggling. McLean and Sproat continue to show they should be next-in-line if the Mets need a long-term starter. I say long-term as GM David Stearns prefers not to call up prospects just for a spot start. McLean, a third-round pick from 2023 as a two-way player, has thrived since solely concentrating on pitching. He's steadily moved up the ladder and has delivered a 3.05 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 62:23 K:BB through 56 innings (10 outings), including back-to-back starts with 10 punchouts. Sproat, who saw his prospect shine dim, is now coming off seven straight strong outings at Syracuse where he's managed a 1.15 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 43:13 K:BB. New York needs a spark that either of them could provide. McLean - 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same stash bid); Sproat - 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (upped stash bid)
Tobias Myers, Brewers: Logan Henderson was slated to start Saturday in place of Jacob Misiorowski (tibia), but went on the IL with right elbow inflammation. The 26-year-old has started in five of his eight appearances with the Brewers while recording a 4.30 ERA and a 19:10 K:BB across 23 innings. Myers started against the Mets and surrendered three runs on five hits and a pair of walks while fanning four in 3.1 innings. He could remain in the rotation until Misiorowski returns. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Robby Snelling, Marlins: Snelling is rolling at Triple-A Jacksonville following his promotion from Double-A Pensacola as he sports a dazzling 1.63 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 34:5 K:BB from 27.2 innings. He was acquired as part of a 2024 deadline deal that sent Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to the Padres. The 21-year-old southpaw isn't on the 40-man roster and hasn't yet been shifted to a five-day schedule that would mirror a big-league rotation, so the Marlins may not have immediate plans to call him up. Snelling appears ready for the Majors, and a move up during the second half of August would still preserve his rookie status for 2026. Keep him on your radar. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (spec call up bid)
Hurston Waldrep, Braves: Waldrep, who was solid in a spot start on Aug. 2, pitched the first game of Saturday's doubleheader where he allowed one run on four hits and a walk with five Ks in notching the win. The 2023 first-round First-Year Player Draft pick gave Atlanta 5.2 strong innings in his season debut, five days after going seven scoreless frames for Triple-A Gwinnett in his best outing of the minor-league campaign. Waldrep had been coming on strong with a 1.99 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 36:16 K:BB over his last seven starts and 40.2 innings. And with Atlanta's pitching staff a mess, his solid effort against Miami should earn him a much longer look. Atlanta is trying to get through the rest of the year with veteran retreads Carlos Carrasco (5.68 ERA) and Erick Fedde (5.32 ERA) rounding out the rotation, though neither are part of the team's future plans. The big key for Waldrep will be improving his poor control, which has been one knock on him since college. If that happens, he boasts the repertoire to succeed. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $7

RELIEF PITCHER
Jose Alvarado, Phillies: Alvarado, handed an 80-game PED suspension in mid-May, started a rehab assignment at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. The reliever is eligible to be activated Aug. 19 and will make some appearances to get back up to speed. Alvarado won't reclaim the closer role for the Phillies as they added Jhoan Duran at the deadline. Keep in mind he'll be ineligible for the postseason, which could also play a factor in how he's deployed. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Jalen Beeks/Kendall Graveman, Diamondbacks: Trades and injuries have thinned out the back end of the Arizona bullpen. Beeks and Graveman look to be the current favorites to handle closing when a save opportunity arises. Both list experience in that role and neither currently holds an advantage over the other, though Graveman as a righty could have an edge as Beeks may mainly be used to get a tough lefty out in the eighth inning. A sleeper could be Andrew Saalfrank as he's posted solid numbers since being promoted from Triple-A Reno. Beeks - 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6; Graveman - 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7
Ben Casparius, Dodgers: Casparius was mentioned two weeks ago and deserves another shotout as he notched his second save of the year last Sunday. He should remain firmly in LA's ninth inning mix due to Blake Treinen slightly struggling with both Kirby Yates (back) and Tanner Scott (elbow) on the IL. 12-team Mixed: $2, 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11
Pierce Johnson, Braves: Johnson continues to be a solid high-leverage option even with Raisel Iglesias on the team and closing. He's only been scored upon once since Jun. 13 to go with a 0.48 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB through his last 19 appearances (18.2 innings) with two wins and five holds. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Juan Mejia/Victor Vodnik, Rockies: Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said last Sunday Mejia and Vodnik will share the closer job while Seth Halvorsen is on the 15-day IL. Mejia has performed well in his first ML season by collecting a 4.05 ERA (3.38 FIP) and 43:13 K:BB across 40 relief innings. The 25-year-old has yet to record a save in the bigs, but has received more high-leverage work with four holds from his last nine appearances. Vodnik carries some closing experience, yet his high WHIP and walk rate don't bode well for future success. If taking a flyer on one, go with Mejia. Mejia - 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7; Vodnik - 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Shelby Miller, Brewers: Miller, initially placed on the 15-day IL on Jul. 7 with a right forearm strain, was sent to Triple-A Nashville Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. He joined the Brewers on Friday, where he'll help set up Trevor Megill. The righty posted a 1.98 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB while notching 10 saves over 36.1 frames for Arizona before being sidelined. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (if waived)
David Robertson, Phillies: D-Rob was first discussed as a free agent and then signed with the Phillies, so he's back in this column as he's set to be activated Sunday. He produced mixed results at Triple-A Lehigh Valley as he surrendered three runs in one inning during two of his six minor-league appearances while going without an earned run through the other four. Robertson showed last year at age 40 that he's still an effective reliever as he registered a 3.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 99:27 K:BB across 72 innings while picking up two saves and 35 holds through 68 appearances with the Rangers. For the Phillies, he's likely to pitch in middle relief. 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: $0; 12-team NL: $5
Kirby Yates, Dodgers: Yates, on the IL since Jul. 29 due to lower back pain, threw a bullpen session Friday. Manager Dave Roberts indicated he's closer to being activated than the team's other injured relievers (Michael Kopech (knee) and Tanner Scott (elbow)), though it's unclear if he'll be ready to return when first eligible on Aug. 13. If Yates can beat the others back to action, he has a good chance to close as the Dodgers have been using several candidates of late. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (early injury return bid)
CATCHER
Miguel Amaya, Cubs: Amaya has been sidelined with a left oblique strain since late May and should return ahead of the team's series in Toronto. He's almost completed his rehab assignment, which began in the Arizona Complex League and now at Triple-A Iowa. Upon coming back, Amaya - who slashed .280/.313/.515 with four homers and 25 RBI over 27 games before being sidelined - will likely displace Reese McGuire as the Cubs' top backup to Carson Kelly. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (up if desperate for a second catcher)
Braxton Fulford, Rockies: Fulford is riding the Triple-A Albuquerque-Colorado shuttle as his promotion on Sunday kicked off his fourth stint this season with the Rockies. He'll be a third catcher just like his prior usage. 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4
Gabriel Moreno, Diamondbacks: Moreno, out since mid June and on the 60-day IL with a hairline fracture in his right pointer finger, got three at-bats in a live hitting session Friday and ran the bases for the first time since suffering the injury. Manager Torey Lovullo provided an update on Moreno saying: "He's going to catch more bullpens, take some more at-bats, build up that hand strength, arm strength. I'm looking for him to probably play games in (Triple-A) Reno or somewhere midweek this week. …All things considered, with where he's at right now, it's probably going be a little bit in back of that 60-day marker (Aug. 15)." The Diamondbacks are carrying three active catchers without Moreno, so there are decisions to make at the No. 2 spot as Jose Herrera, James McCann and Adrian Del Castillo are all in the mix. Once Moreno is ready to return, look for him to resume his role as the starter. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $7 (early injury return bid)
FIRST BASE
Bryce Eldridge, Giants: Eldridge, on the IL from Jun. 24 due to a hamstring injury, has raked since returning to Triple-A Sacramento going 20-for-70 with eight home runs and 27 RBI. The 25:10 K:BB certainly shows he needs work in that regard, yet he's displayed tremendous power. Eldridge will spend additional time in the minors to fully regain his timing at the plate, but should receive a chance with the parent club over the last six weeks. Rafael Devers is locked in at first and DH as is Wilmer Flores, though look for Eldridge to come up soon enough. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (upped spec call up bid)
SECOND BASE
Adael Amador, Rockies: Amador has also been on the Triple-A Albuquerque-Colorado express, but could be up for a while. He joined the 26-man active roster on Tuesday as a replacement for Thairo Estrada (hamstring), who went on the 10-day IL The 22-year-old could see regular reps at the keystone while Estrada is out, yet he's only managed a .180/.253/.256 line through 148 career big-league plate appearances prior to the promotion. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $0; 12-team NL: $6
Vidal Brujan, Braves: Brujan was claimed off waivers from the Orioles, marking his third team in a little over a week as he was originally with the Cubs. He'll likely fill a role as a super utility player in Atlanta. Brujan has logged time at every position on the field this year except for pitcher, catcher and first. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4

THIRD BASE
Blaze Alexander, Diamondbacks: Alexander has been starting at third for the D-Backs since the trade of Eugenio Suarez to the Mariners. He's gone 9-for-27 (.333) with four extra-base hits - including two homers - in eight August games. Jordan Lawlar should be ready to join the club in the next few weeks, but until then Alexander should continue to cover the hot corner. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9
Kyle Karros/Aaron Schunk, Rockies: Karros and Schunk were promoted Friday as part of a bunch of moves. One of the top prospects in Colorado's farm system, Karros has slashed .306/.368/.500 with two homers, four RBI and nine runs through 68 plate appearances since being promoted to Triple-A mid-July. He earned that step up after posting an .875 OPS with 15 home runs and 12 steals across 123 appearances at Double-A Hartford. Karros offers strong plate discipline with a 12.7 percent walk rate and 18.5 percent strikeout rate, though lacks power having only gone deep six times during 2025 after 15 with High-A Spokane last year. Despite this, he should still should get plenty of action at the hot corner and DH with the Rockies. Schunk opted to stay in the organization after being DFA'd in late May, and the move seems to have paid off as he'll return to the Majors while Orlando Arcia (elbow) goes on the 10-day IL. He hit the ball well in Triple-A since the beginning of June with a .397/.417/.654 line alongside two steals, five doubles, three triples, three homers and 18 RBI from 84 plate appearances. Schunk will get work all over the infield as a utility player. Karros - 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11; Schunk - 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5
Graham Pauley, Marlins: Pauley is making the most of his playing time at third as he's gone 7-for-26 over his last 12 games, a stretch that includes all three of his big-league homers this season. He should retain the role for at the rest of the month with Connor Norby out 6-to-8 weeks after July surgery on a broken left hamate bone. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11
SHORTSTOP
Nacho Alvarez, Braves: Alvarez is occupying the hot corner - likely along with Vidal Brujan - with Austin Riley (abdominal soreness) on the IL. He's dealing with side soreness, but was in the starting lineup on Friday. If healthy, Alvarez should earn most of the action. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $6;
Jordan Lawlar, Diamondbacks: Lawlar, sidelined since late-June with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, took live batting practice on Tuesday. The plan was for him to get into some form of game situation Thursday and kick off a brief rehab assignment. Once healthy, Lawlar will likely start at third with Eugenio Suarez gone. He endured an eight-game hitless stretch during his first exposure to the Majors in May, yet raked at Triple-A by producing a .997 OPS with 10 home runs and 18 steals across 52 appearances. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (early injury return bid).
OUTFIELD
Justin Dean, Dodgers: Dean, signed to a minor-league contract this past offseason, slashed .274/.370/.426 with 25 steals with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was promoted on Friday to replace Esteury Ruiz on the LA roster. Dean, a 17th-round pick from 2018, can play all three outfield spots and is likely to be used as a reserve and pinch runner as well as defensive replacement due to his excellent skills there. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: $0; 12-team NL: $5
Drew Gilbert, Giants: Gilbert, traded by the Mets as part of the Tyler Rogers deal, was called up Friday. He went 7-for-14 with two RBI, three runs and two steals over five games at Triple-A Sacramento, which came on the heels of a hot stretch for Triple-A Syracuse prior to the deal. With Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) on the IL, the 24-year-old Gilbert is receiving an opportunity to prove himself in the bigs while starting in right field - at least against righties. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (up if believe strides he made this year are sustainable)
Heriberto Hernandez, Marlins: Hernandez has done well with additional playing time since Jesus Sanchez moved to the Astros. His long ball on Friday was his seventh of the year and fourth in his last 11 games. During that stretch, the 25-year-old is 10-for-37 with 11 RBI and eight runs scored. Hernandez has been a pleasant surprise since his end-of-May promotion having become a starting outfielder. 12-team Mixed: $5; 15-team Mixed: $11; 12-team NL: Rostered
Jakob Marsee, Marlins: Marsee was profiled last week after he made his MLB debut. He's provided a boost to the Marlins, who have been red-hot of late. Marsee brings slight power with a ton of speed, the latter being the biggest impact while replacing Jesus Sanchez, who was dealt to Houston. Jump on the bandwagon and enjoy the ride. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14
Brandon Marsh, Phillies: Marsh is on a bit of a heater having picked up multiple hits from six of his last 12 outings. Since returning from the IL in early May, the outfielder has been very productive in the lower part of Philadelphia's lineup while operating in a strong-side platoon role. Coming into Saturday. Marsh was slashing .314/.371/.486 with six homers, 22 RBI, 36 runs scored and five steals over his last 234 plate appearances (75 games). 12-team Mixed: $5; 15-team Mixed: $11; 12-team NL: Rostered
Blake Perkins, Brewers: Perkins, like Jakob Marsee, was brought up last week. And like Marsee, he's being profiled again as his value has risen. Perkins continues to thrive in the absence of Jackson Chourio (hamstring) as he's started eight straight games in center field while batting .314 with three homers, 10 runs, six RBI and a stolen base. Those numbers far exceed his usual profile, so be prepared to pivot when his .343 BABIP regresses to the mean. For now, enjoy the production. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11
Eli White, Braves: White has done a solid job since replacing Ronald Acuna as he's blasted three home runs while driving in 10 through nine games to nearly double his season output. Acuna could be back in a week or two, which would relegate White to part-time duty. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9
