2023 Fantasy Outlook
Assad made his MLB debut in 2022 and had some nice moments in a small sample size. He appeared in nine games and made eight starts, recording a 3.11 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with 30 strikeouts across 37.2 innings. Assad was good in two minor-league stops as well, posting a 2.51 ERA over 71.2 innings for Double-A Tennessee and a 2.95 ERA across 36.2 innings for Triple-A Iowa. He had a K/9 above 9.0 at each of those stops as well, so while his strikeouts dipped a bit in the majors, there could be room for growth there. The 25-year-old probably did enough to work his way into the team's 2023 Opening Day rotation mix. Veteran Marcus Stroman will lead the way, followed by Kyle Hendricks when healthy. Behind those two are the likes of Justin Steele, Keegan Thompson, Hayden Wesneski, Adbert Alzolay and Adrian Sampson. It's a muddled picture, but Assad certainly could emerge from that pack, and he'd be on the fantasy radar if he can continue his success from last year. Read Past Outlooks

Lined up to pitch Thursday
Cubs manager David Ross told reporters that Assad is lined up to pitch Thursday for Chicago, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hayden Wesneski is listed as Thursday's probable starter, and it's worth pointing out the two are currently in a battle for one of the final starting spots in Chicago's rotation. Assad impressed in his time with Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, and he could be a bullpen option for the Cubs if he doesn't open the season in the starting rotation.
