We have two goals for this article:

1. Identify likely free agents and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.

2. Estimate how much of your $100 starting free-agent budget you should bid on them.

Bids in general are best guesstimates. With so much uncertainty at least initially, those values may be even greater estimates than usual. The FAAB chart below lets users easily see at a glance how certain players stack up against others and how much they should command in a variety of formats.

The chart, which is sortable by column (click on the header), include a very basic "player grade" column. This is a reflection of a player's skills and role on an A-E scale. An "A" grade is reserved for a high-impact prospect stepping into an everyday role.

If you have questions on players, I'm happy to provide my thoughts in the comments.

STARTING PITCHER

Walker Buehler, Phillies: Buehler, waived by the Red Sox, agreed to a one-year contract with the Phillies last Sunday and will start Friday. He struggled in Boston by posting a 5.45 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 84:55 K:BB in 112.1 innings over 23 appearances (22 starts). Buehler does bring a playoff pedigree and could shift into a long-relief role after his initial outing. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $2; 12-team NL: $7

Anthony DeSclafani, Diamondbacks: DeSclafani, on the shelf since mid-August due to right thumb inflammation, threw 30 pitches during Friday's bullpen session. The veteran righty is poised to return to the Diamondbacks' rotation barring any setbacks. DeSclafani notched a 4.36 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB across 33 major-league innings this season. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: 6 (injury return bid)

Josiah Gray, Nationals: After an excellent 2023, Gray got rocked in his first two starts last season before eventually requiring Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure. He's progressed from throwing live batting practice to beginning a rehab assignment with High-A Wilmington on Sunday. Gray is slated to throw two innings or 35 pitches and will need three or four appearances. Assuming he can avoid a setback, the 27-year-old has a good chance of coming off the IL for a cameo with the Nationals before the end of the campaign. Gray should enter spring training as a favorite to fill a rotation spot. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (same early injury return bid)

Tylor Megill, Mets: Megill, on the IL since Jun. 17 with a sprained right elbow, made his fifth overall and third rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. He'll receive at least one more outing before potentially rejoining the Mets later this month. With the club going with three rookies in their rotation, Kodai Senga in the minors for two starts and Sean Manaea struggling, Megill could work in a bulk relief role with the veteran starters not going deep into games while needing additional swing-and-miss arms. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (same early injury return bid)

Robby Snelling, Marlins: Snelling continues to roll at Triple-A Jacksonville following his promotion from Double-A Pensacola. The Marlins acquired him as part of a 2024 deadline deal that sent Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing to the Padres. The 21-year-old southpaw has delivered seven straight quality starts at Triple-A while fanning double-digit batters three times and producing a 1.24 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 62:9 K:BB through 43.2 innings. The lack of a 40-man roster spot and desire to delay the start of service time seem to be the only thing preventing Snelling from joining Miami despite six starters on the IL. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same spec bid, up if promoted)

Michael Soroka, Cubs: Soroka, on the 15-day IL since early August with a right shoulder strain, threw his first live batting practice session Tuesday. The right-hander has a chance to return before the end of the season, though still has some ramping up to do particularly if the Cubs want to bring him back as a starter. Until then, Javier Assad will continue to fill in as Chicago's fifth starter, at least until Jameson Taillon returns from his groin injury. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (early injury return bid)

Brandon Sproat, Mets: Sproat, whose prospect status may have dimmed earlier in the season, has been red-hot of late. His fine pitching coupled with the struggles of Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea and Clay Holmes resulted in Sproat's promotion to start Sunday. He recorded a 2.44 ERA and 70:21 K:BB over 59 innings covering his last 11 outings to join fellow neophytes Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong in the rotation. Sproat's starting spot isn't set in stone, but a strong performance would give him a strong chance to continue there. 12-team Mixed: $2, 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (up in keeper leagues)

Randy Vasquez, Padres: Vasquez was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday against the Rockies. The 26-year-old, who last pitched for San Diego on Aug. 15, has a 3.96 ERA and a 59:49 K:BB in 111.1 innings spanning 23 appearances. Vasquez replaces Nestor Cortes (biceps) in the rotation. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6

Ryan Weathers, Marlins: Weathers, on the shelf since early June due to a strained left lat, will rejoin the Marlins' rotation next week - likely on Sep. 10 against the Nationals. He completed a couple of rehab starts, his last for 68 pitches and 4.2 innings and will probably be limited for this next outing. The southpaw has been limited to five starts for the Marlins while collecting a 3.28 ERA and 23:8 K:BB across 24.2 innings. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (upped injury return bid)

Kai-Wei Teng, Giants: Teng was called up and inserted into the rotation Monday in place of Carson Whisenhunt (back), where he allowed two runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out eight over 5.1 innings to notch the win over the Rockies. He struggled with an 8.78 ERA through four August starts before being demoted, but looked like a different pitcher on Monday. Despite his struggles during four outings with the Giants, Teng has been effective at Triple-A Sacramento with a 3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 89:22 K:BB across 57 innings. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6

RELIEF PITCHER

Aaron Civale, Cubs: Civale, claimed off waivers from the White Sox, will be used as a long reliever. His 2024 struggles continued into this year as he notched a 5.26 ERA and 1.37 WHIP from 89 innings (18 starts) between Chicago and Milwaukee. 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5

Cole Henry, Nationals: Henry notched the save on Saturday. Jose Ferrer, the team's primary closer, pitched the eighth against the top of the Chicago lineup. That left the ninth for Henry, who worked around a one-out Cubs single to close out the contest. He's held the opposition scoreless in nine of his past 10 appearances, though gave up three runs in his lone poor outing. Ferrer remains the Nationals' likely top option for saves, yet Henry appears to be next-in-line. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7

Tyler Kinley, Braves: For the second straight season, Atlanta has rescued a struggling Rockies reliever with a turnaround campaign. Kinley struggled to a 5.66 ERA and 1.448 WHIP in 49 appearances in Colorado before coming over in a trade for pitcher Austin Smith. In 15 outings since, the 34-year-old carries a sparkling 0.61 ERA - including four wins during his last six. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6

Michael Kopech, Dodgers: Kopech, out since Jul. 1 due to a torn meniscus which required surgery, was activated on Monday. He made seven minor-league rehab appearances in which he allowed seven runs alongside a 2.81 WHIP and 5:9 K:BB in 5.1 innings. Kopech returns to the LA bullpen in a setup role. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (same injury return bid)

Taylor Rashi/Jake Woodford, Diamondbacks:  Rashi collected a multi-inning save in both of his first two big-league appearances (Aug. 28 and Sep. 2) while Woodford got one Wednesday after blowing another attempt on Monday. Andrew Saalfrank also remains in the closing mix to create a mix-and-match and committee approach. Rashi posted a 3.48 ERA with a 72:30 K:BB through 67.1 innings and 40 games at Triple-A Reno. Woodford was profiled last week and has been solid the last 14 days, yet his overall numbers remain mediocre. The situation is fluid, so bid accordingly. Both - 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9

Craig Yoho, Brewers: Yoho was called up Monday from Triple-A Nashville. He came into the season as one of baseball's top reliever prospects, though his control has deserted him in the Majors with an 8.22 ERA and 9:5 BB:K in 7.2 innings across three separate stints with the Brewers. Yaho has been as advertised at Triple-A by logging a 1.04 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 55 strikeouts and seven saves in 43.1 innings across 39 appearances. With Shelby Miller joining Trevor Megill on the IL, Yoho could initially earn a key bullpen role. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5

CATCHER

Francisco Alvarez, Mets: Alvarez has been mentioned her twice after returning to MLB in August after a short stint in the minors and is back as he was activated off the IL Friday. Sidelined first with a sprained right thumb UCL, he fracturedhis left pinkie when hit by a pitch on Aug. 27. He was back throwing and hitting two days and showed he was "healthy" by hitting a 400-plus homer during his current rehab assignment. Luis Torrens enjoyed a hot week prior to the return of Alvarez, so the Mets can spot him accordingly based on his pain threshold. Alvarez is covered again in case he was waived in some leagues after suffering the original injury. Prior to being sidelined, he was 10-for-24 with seven runs, three home runs and nine RBI across eight games. 12-team Mixed: $2, 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (same injury return bid)

Drew Romo/Garrett Stubbs: Colorado and Philly promoted third catchers this week. Romo slashed .264/.329/.409 with seven homers over 60 games at Triple-A Albuquerque. He'll spot Hunter Goodman and Braxton Fulford. Stubbs hit .265 with eight home runs and five steals in 71 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will backup J.T. Realmuto and Rafael Marchan. Both - 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4;

Ben Rortvedt/Chuckie Robinson, Dodgers: Will Smith took a foul tip off his right hand Wednesday. He underwent a CT scan and missed this weekend's games. Dalton Rushing was handling the bulk of the action behind the plate while Rortvedt was promoted Thursday to provide LA with a backup catcher. Rushing, who had struggled this year, carried the prospect pedigree to ably fill in while Smith is sidelined. He landed on the IL Saturday with a bone bruise in his right shin after fouling a ball off his leg Friday. Rortvedt is expected to make a handful of starts with Smith out while the Dodgers promoted Robinson from Triple-A Albuquerque for extra backstop depth. Rortvedt - 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6; Williams - 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4

Keibert Ruiz, Nationals: Ruiz, sidelined with a concussion since early July, began a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Harrisburg. Riley Adams has ably filed in and there's no reason to rush Ruiz back, likely contributing to him remaining in the minors. Ruiz could still be back by the middle of September and receive a fair share of the action behind the plate. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (same injury return bid)

FIRST BASE

Jared Young, Mets: Young was promoted Tuesday to replace Tyrone Taylor (hamstring) on the Mets roster after recording a .964 OPS with 15 home runs in 66 games at Triple-A Syracuse. He managed three more long balls in 45 plate appearances with the Mets, though he's only slashing .171/.222/.415 and holds a 33.3 percent strikeout rate. Young is likely to be used mostly in a pinch-hitting role and could be sent down when Jose Siri (leg) or Taylor is ready to return. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4

SECOND BASE

Luisangel Acuna, Mets: Acuna was called up from Triple-A Syracuse with the rosters expanding on Monday. The 23-year-old righty hitter batted .303 with no home runs and eight steals through 28 minor-league games on top of a .239 without going deep and 12 stolen bases in 175 plate appearances with the Mets. Acuna saw minimal action before being demoted and will be used as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement off the bench, though could get some starts against southpaws. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5

Blaze Alexander, Diamondbacks: Alexander's playing time looked like it was about to decrease following the promotion of Jordan Lawlar, but Lourdes Gurriel suffered a torn ACL that created a vacancy in center field. Alexander has taken over there while producing well of late. If that continues, Arizona will find creative ways to get him in the lineup. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14

Hyeseong Kim, Dodgers: Kim, on the IL since Jul. 29 due to left shoulder bursitis, was activated as expected when the rosters expanded Monday. He kicked off a rehab appearance with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 21 and has not encountered any setbacks. Kim worked at left field in the minors and may be used there with LA in addition to action at the keystone. But for now, he's a spot starter. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same bid)

Nick Yorke, Pirates: Yorke was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. The 23-year-old has been serviceable as an everyday player with a .287/.348/.406 slash line, seven homers and 17 steals over 440 plate appearances, yet didn't receive a promotion until now. Yorke looks to have settled into a short-side platoon with Spencer Horwitz at first and could receive more playing time there and around the infield/outfield if he hits well. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7

THIRD BASE

Maximo Acosta/Jack Winkler, Marlins: The Marlins recalled Acosta and Winkler from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday. Acosta takes the roster spot vacated by the injured Connor Norby (undisclosed) and could receive ample playing time at third. The 22-year-old only went 4-for-24 during his nine games with the big club before being sent back down, but produced a .229/.315/.377 line with 13 homers and 31 steals at Jacksonville. Winkler was designated for assignment last month, yet stayed with the organization. He'll back up Acosta at the hot corner. Acosta - 12-team Mixed: $0; 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6; Winkler - 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4

Cam Devanney, Pirates: Devanney, profiled after he was promoted last Saturday to take the place of the injured Ronny Simon (shoulder), is here again as he's been provided with consistent playing time having started four straight games at the hot corner before sitting on Friday. Since joining the Pirates organization via a trade from Kansas City in mid-July, he went .256/.327/.361 with two homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored over 147 plate appearances. Drafted in the 15th round by Milwaukee during 2019, Devanney displated some power in the minors and should continue to see decent work down the stretch. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (slightly upped bid)

Sal Stewart, Reds: Stewart was promoted from Triple-A Louisville with the lineups expanding on Monday. He began the year at Double-A Chattanooga, where he posted an .850 OPS en route to a promotion to Louisville following the All-Star break. The 21-year-old was unfazed by the jump in competition and slashed a sizzling .315/.394/.629 with 10 homers and four steals in 38 contests to make his way to the bigs. Stewart should get time at first, second and third as well as DH for Cincy, though sat two straight outings after starting the first two. 12-team Mixed: $3; 15-team Mixed: $9; 12-team NL: $14

SHORTSTOP

Ha-Seong Kim, Braves: Atlanta claimed Kim off waivers from Tampa Bay on Monday. They're on the hook for the roughly $2 million remaining on his contract this season, and the 29-year-old holds a $16 million player option for 2026. Kim, on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to lower back inflammation, returned to action Tuesday. He only managed a .214/.290/.321 line over 24 games at the big-league level for the Rays, but went 3-for-8 with a game-winning homer from his first two games. Kim should cover at shortstop for the remainder of the season. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11

Ryan Kreidler, Pirates: Kreidler, claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh from Detroit on Aug. 24, was promoted last Sunday. He's receiving a look in the big leagues as Isiah Kiner-Falefa was claimed by the Blue Jays. Kreidler slashed .138/.208/.176 through 211 plate appearances across parts of four ML seasons with the Tigers and can play multiple infield and outfield spots. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4

OUTFIELD

Kevin Alcantara, Cubs: Alcantara was promoted from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, replacing fellow prospect Owen Caissie on the active roster. He slashed .266/.349/.470 with 17 home runs and 10 stolen bases over 102 games, yet likely won't be up for much playing time in the Chicago outfield while all of Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker are available. For now, Alcantara provides the Cubs depth. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (up in keeper leagues)

Jorge Barrosa, Diamondbacks: Barrosa was called up Monday to replace Lourdes Gurriel (torn ACL) on the D-Backs' active roster. Left field could consist of Jake McCarthy against right-handers while Barrosa or Blaze Alexander takes over versus southpaws. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $6

Griffin Conine, Marlins: Conine, who underwent surgery on Apr. 29 to repair a dislocated left shoulder, was expected to miss the remainder of the season. He progressed quicker than expected and was to join one of the Marlins' affiliates this past week to begin a rehab assignment. Conine will likely need a healthy number of at-bats before being ready to rejoin Miami. Before getting shut down with the shoulder injury, he had gotten off to a solid start by slashing .281/.352/.438 with one homer and seven RBI over 20 games. 12-team Mixed: $0; 15-team Mixed: $2; 12-team NL: $7 (early injury return bid)

Jerar Encarnacion, Giants: Encarnacion, sidelined since early August with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain, could start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento by the end of the week and be back on the Giants' active roster by mid-September. Injuries have limited him to 10 games this season. Upon returning, Encarnacion will be a backup outfielder while facing southpaws to help the club in their Wild Card hunt. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $6 (early injury return bid)

Daylen Lile, Nationals: Lile has somewhat quietly caught fire since the All-Star break having produced a .330/.368/.504 line with 13 extra-base hits (seven doubles, five triples, and a homer), five steals, 16 RBI and 19 runs through 32 contests. His overall numbers are in line with his minor-league totals while he's carved out a starting outfield role between James Wood and Dylan Crews. 12-team Mixed: $5; 15-team Mixed: $11; 12-team NL: $16 (if not rostered)

Grant McCray, Giants: The Giants recalled McCray from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday. He appeared in 10 games for San Fran last month and only slashed .100/.100/.200 with a 0:10 BB:K from 21 plate appearances. McCray held a .746 OPS with 15 home runs and 27 steals over 510 plate appearances with Sacramento and his place may only last until Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) is ready to come back. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5

Victor Mesa, Marlins: Mesa was promoted last Sunday to take the roster spot of Dane Myers (oblique), who went on the IL. He went .305/.371/.516 with six homers and 26 runs driven over 36 games for Triple-A Jacksonville. Mesa could receive consistent playing time down the stretch with Miami looking to evaluate talent heading into 2026, though the potential returns of Kyle Stowers (oblique) and Griffin Conine (shoulder) could change that situation. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5

Victor Scott, Cardinals: Scott missed three weeks with a sprained left ankle before returning to action Monday. He's struggled at the plate this year with the primary stat being his 31 steals in 118 games. The speedster has regained his role as the Cardinals' primary center fielder down the stretch, but Nathan Church should occasionally figure in at the position. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (if not rostered and need speed)

Jose Siri, Mets: Siri, on the shelf since Apr. 17 due to a fractured left tibia, began a rehab assignment at Low-A St. Lucie. With the Mets having acquired Cedric Mullins at the deadline, the they were in no rush to activate Siri. The injury to Tyrone Taylor (hamstring) could accelerate his return timeframe. Siri could get work against left-handed pitching when activated. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5 (same injury return bid)
