We have two goals for this article:
1. Identify likely free agents and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.
2. Estimate how much of your $100 starting free-agent budget you should bid on them.
Bids in general are best guesstimates. With so much uncertainty at least initially, those values may be even greater estimates than usual. The FAAB chart below lets users easily see at a glance how certain players stack up against others and how much they should command in a variety of formats.
The chart, which is sortable by column (click on the header), include a very basic "player grade" column. This is a reflection of a player's skills and role on an A-E scale. An "A" grade is reserved for a high-impact prospect stepping into an everyday role.
If you have questions on players, I'm happy to provide my thoughts in the comments.

STARTING PITCHER
Javier Assad, Cubs: Assad has bounced between MLB and the minors the past three weeks. He should remain in the Cubs rotation as a replacement for Jameson Taillon (groin), who was placed on the 15-day injured list this week. Assad allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks to notch his first win of the season on Saturday against the Rockies. He made five rehab starts in the minors, pitching to the tune of a 2.45 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB across 18.1 innings and is coming off back-to-back solid seasons. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same bid as prior)
Josiah Gray, Nationals: Gray was excellent during 2023 and got rocked in his first two starts last year before going on the IL with an elbow injury that eventually required Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure. He threw 30 pitches of live batting practice Wednesday and may need another session or two before being cleared for a rehab assignment. Assuming Gray can avoid a setback, the 27-year-old has a good chance of returning for a cameo with the Nationals before the end of the campaign. He should enter spring training as a favorite to fill a rotation spot. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (very early injury return bid)
Rhett Lowder, Reds: Lowder could return from the 60-day IL before the end of the season. First sidelined with a forearm issue and then a severe oblique strain, he's been throwing off a mound and tossed two bullpen sessions this past week. The Reds need to map out the next steps in Lowder's recovery with an outside shot he returns before the end of the year. The 2023 seventh overall pick posted a 1.17 ERA through six ML starts last season. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (early injury return bid)
German Marquez, Rockies: Marquez, who had a nearly five-week absence due to right biceps tendinitis, returned to action and started Friday against the Cubs. The veteran right-hander worked up to 76 pitches during his second and last minor-league rehab start, so he could handle a full workload. Marquez has managed a better ERA at Coors Field (5.31) than on the road (5.95) this season, so let that be your judge on whether to add him. 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5
Tylor Megill, Mets: Megill, on the IL since Jun. 17 with a sprained right elbow, completed his third and next-to-last rehab start at Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. After two decent outings, he struggled a bit by walking four batters and surrendering three runs in four innings and 70 pitches. Megill will make one more outings before potentially rejoining the Mets in September after the rosters expand. He could work in a bulk relief role as the starters don't usually go deep while the team needs additional swing-and-miss arms. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $5 (same early injury return bid)
Johan Oviedo, Pirates: Oviedo was profiled last week and gets another mention as he's strung together three straight solid starts. He's registered a 2.57 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB across 14 innings, so the next step will be for him to last longer. Oviedo returned from Tommy John surgery in Sep. 2023 and had a 3.12 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP and 36:7 K:BB through eight starts (26 innings) in the minors this year. He should remain in the rotation the rest of the way. 12-team Mixed: $2, 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (upped bid)
Chad Patrick, Brewers: Patrick gave uo two runs on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings last Sunday, and was then optioned to the minors. If Quinn Priester's wrist "issue" sidelines him longer, Patrick could be recalled to fill in. This is especially so after the rosters expand by two on Monday, when a corresponding move wouldn't be required. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Jonah Tong, Mets: Tong is being repeated here as he was somewhat surprisingly promoted this week and started Friday versus the Marlins where he allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits while fanning six across five innings to notch the win. He blazed up the prospect ranks with 11.2 scoreless with 17 strikeouts and 39 swing and misses in his two starts at Triple-A Syracuse after dominating at Double-A Binghamton by posting a 1.59 ERA with an eye-popping 162 strikeouts in 102 innings. Tong, who has a Tim Lincecum-like over the top delivery with maximum extension, offers a high-90s fastball, wipeout changeup and developing slider. He wasn't expected to be called up, yet his minor-league performance proved hard to ignore. 12-team Mixed: $5, 15-team Mixed: $11; 12-team NL: $16 (up in keeper leagues)
Ryan Weathers, Marlins: Weathers, on the shelf since early June due to a strained left lat, was expected to make a three-inning rehab start on Saturday. The southpaw has been limited to five starts for the Marlins this season, but has collected a 3.28 ERA and 23:8 K:BB through 24.2 innings. If all goes well Saturday, Weathers is expected to make another start in the minors before returning from the 60-day IL and slotting back into the Miami rotation before the middle of September. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (early injury return bid)

RELIEF PITCHER
Jose Butto, Giants: Butto has done well since coming to the Giants in the Tyler Rogers deal with the Mets having posted a 2.38 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB in 11.1 innings over 12 appearances. Butto has settled into a setup role in front of Ryan Walker. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Erick Fedde, Brewers: Fedde signed a one-year deal and was used in bulk relief on Wednesday. Between stops with St. Louis and Atlanta earlier this season, he's been one of the baseball's most ineffective starters by logging a 5.76 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 76:60 K:BB over 125 innings. Fedde flamed out in his short stint with the Braves and conceded two runs on eight hits and no walks in 4.1 innings to take the loss. If Quinn Priester remains out, Fedde could receive more bulk relief duty with Chad Patrick likely to be called up to cover the rotation spot. 12-team Mixed: No, 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $4
Ryan Fernandez/Kyle Leahy, Cardinals: Fernandez and Leahy each notched their first saves of the season this past weekend. Fernandez has an 11.9 K/9 through 11.1 innings since being called up at the beginning of August, yet that comes with a 4.76 ERA and 5.6 BB/9. Leahy is to be a starter next spring while operating in relief this season. JoJo Romero and Riley O'Brien are St. Louis' main relievers at the back end of the bullpen, though it's clear the closer picture is a bit murky. Both - 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7
Michael Kopech, Dodgers: Kopech, out since Jul. 1 due to a torn meniscus which required surgery, is six outings into a minor-league rehab assignment where he's posted a 7.20 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and 4:6 K:BB from five innings. While those numbers aren't pretty, three of the four runs came during his first appearance and he followed that with four consecutive scoreless performances. Kopech will return to the LA bullpen this week in a setup role. By waiting until after Sep. 1 to activate Kopech, the Dodgers won't need to make a corresponding roster move as the veteran reliever is slated to be one of the two players added when rosters expand. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (injury return bid)
Tyler Phillips, Marlins: Phillips picked up his third save of the season on Saturday (all coming during the last month) to go with five holds and a 3.20 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB across 64.2 innings. Calvin Faucher and Ronny Henriquez represent Miami's two primary closers, but Phillips has carved out a key role. 12-team Mixed: $1, 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9
Abner Uribe, Brewers: Following a dominant 2023, last year was awful for Uribe resulting in him being sent down. He's significantly rebounded this season going 18 straight appearances without allowing an earned run, a streak that runs through the entire second half. Uribe has quietly put together a dominant campaign by posting a 1.65 ERA with 79 strikeouts through 65.1 innings. He's currently closing with Trevor Megill going on the 15-day IL Wednesday diagnosed with a Grade 1 flexor tendon strain. Megill hopes to be activated around when first eligible on Sep. 9 with Uribe moving up a level in the bullpen pecking order. 12-team Mixed: $5, 15-team Mixed: $11; 12-team NL: $16 (if not rostered)
Ryan Walker, Giants: Walker is closing for the Giants with Randy Rodriguez potentially looking at Tommy John surgery and Erik Miller (elbow) also sidelined. On the season, he's up to five wins, 12 saves, eight holds and four blown saves with a 3.54 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 53:14 K:BB across 53.1 innings. Walker hasn't been as dominant as last year, though he's only surrendered one earned run on 12 hits with a 14:4 K:BB in 13 innings from his last 15 appearances. 12-team Mixed: $7, 15-team Mixed: $14; 12-team NL: $22
Jake Woodford, Diamondbacks: Woodford earned the save on Friday after Jalen Beeks and Kyle Backhus were deployed earlier in the contest with the latter getting arguably the toughest assignment against the top of the Dodgers' order in the eighth. Andrew Saalfrank pitched Tuesday and Wednesday and looks to be the primary closer, but was not used Friday. Woodford didn't have an easy time as he went up against the heart of the lineup, yet was able to get the job done to earn his second save of 2025. He's also managed a hold and two blown saves alongside a 5.34 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB through 28.2 innings. Woodford offers multi-inning potential, which may keep him out of high-leverage situations with late-inning opportunities remaining up for grabs and Arizona using a closing committee to protect leads. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
CATCHER
Francisco Alvarez, Mets: Alvarez was profiled twice after returning to MLB in August after a short stint in the minors and gets another mention as his sprained right thumb UCL that won't sideline him for the rest of the season. He's covered here in case he was waived in certain leagues. Alvarez resumed his minor-league rehab stint Saturday. Prior to being sidelined, he was 10-for-24 with seven runs, three homers and nine RBI through eight games. 12-team Mixed: $2, 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (early injury return bid)
Jimmy Crooks, Cardinals: St. Louis promoted Crooks with Yohel Pozo going on the IL with concussion symptoms. The 24-year-old backstop slashed .337/.404/.518 with three home runs in August with Triple-A Memphis and went .274/.337/.441 with 14 homers this year. The left-handed bat has posted excellent numbers since being taken during the fourth round in the 2022 Draft. Crooks could be worth a look if the Cards use him on the long side of a platoon at catcher with Pedro Pages at least until Pozo returns with Ivan Herrera at DH. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6
Pedro Pages, Cardinals: Pages came into Saturday red-hot in August as he's produced an impressive .352/.407/.648 line with four of his 10 homers coming in the last 16 contests along with nine runs and 14 RBI. And on Saturday, he went deep for the second straight day. Pages' fine play behind the plate has allowed St. Louis to use Ivan Herrera as their main DH. 12-team Mixed: $2, 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11
Keibert Ruiz, Nationals: Ruiz, sidelined with a concussion since early July, is ramping up baseball activities and is soon expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Riley Adams has ably filed in, with no reason to rush Ruiz back. He could be back by the middle of September and get a fair share of the action behind the plate for the Nats. 12-team Mixed: $0, 15-team Mixed: $1; 12-team NL: $6 (early injury return bid)
FIRST BASE
Enrique Hernandez, Dodgers: Hernandez had been out since early July with left elbow inflammation and was activated Monday following a short rehab assignment. He posted a disappointing .195 average with eight homers, 22 RBI and 23 runs scored over 186 plate appearances before being shut down. Hernandez is resuming a utility role for the Dodgers. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $6
Rhys Hoskins, Brewers: Hoskins is back here as he's getting closer to returning. Initially placed on the IL Jul. 7 due to a Grade 2 left thumb sprain, he kicked off a rehab stint at Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 19 and has since gone 11-for-35 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Once Hoskins is ready to return, he may not be a full-time starter as Andrew Vaughn has been solid - though has slumped of late. The right-handed-hitting Hoskins should still have a clear path to playing time at either first or DH versus left-handers once he's back to full health. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (same injury return bid)
Tyler Locklear, Diamondbacks: Locklear should start at first the rest of the season with Pavin Smith (quadriceps) landing on the IL. Acquired from Seattle in the Eugenio Suarez deal, Locklear hasn't yet made the most of his chances with a .528 OPS over 22 games. Arizona is in evaluation mode, so they can afford to roll him out almost daily to see if he can replicate or come close to his 2025 Triple-A numbers. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9
SECOND BASE
Hyeseong Kim, Dodgers: Kim, on the IL since Jul. 29 due to left shoulder bursitis, is slated to be activated when rosters expand this week. He began a rehab appearance with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 21 and has encountered no setbacks. Kim is getting work in left field in the minors. Alex Call was acquired at the deadline and has played in left over a struggling Michael Conforto. But if Kim can handle the position defensively, he could receive opportunities there after coming back in addition to action at the keystone. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same early injury return bid)
Cesar Prieto, Cardinals: Prieto was promoted from Triple-A Memphis on Friday with Alec Burleson (wrist inflammation) going on the IL. He is a high-contact, low-power infielder who slashed .296/.358/.453 with 10 home runs with a 13.4 percent strikeout rate this season. Prieto is capable of handling second, third and shortstop while likely operating as a reserve. Lars Nootbaar, Nathan Church and Jordan Walker should be the Cardinals' primary outfielders with Burleson out, though Victor Scott (ankle) is due back next week and would likely displace Church from that group. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5

THIRD BASE
Cam Devanney, Pirates: Pittsburgh promoted Devanney on Saturday to take the place of the injured Ronny Simon (shoulder). Since joining the organization from Kansas City on Jul. 16, he's slashed .256/.327/.361 with two homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored across 147 plate appearances. Drafted in the 15th round by Milwaukee in 2019, Devanney has displayed some power in the minors and could get decent action for the Bucs down the stretch. 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5
Connor Norby, Marlins: Norby, who underwent surgery in July to repair a broken left hamate bone in his hand, was activated and played Friday versus the Mets after a five-game rehab stint at Triple-A Jacksonville. Graham Pauley has been covering third while Norby was sidelined, though will likely cede the spot. Norby produced a .241/.289/.364 line in 273 plate appearances before the injury and may not fully regain his power until next season. 12-team Mixed: $0; 15-team Mixed: $2; 12-team NL: $7 (upped injury return bid)
SHORTSTOP
Jose Iglesias/Mason McCoy, Padres: The Padres placed Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day IL Friday with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot suffered when he fouled a ball off it on Wednesday. He could miss the rest of the season, leaving Iglesias as the probable starting shortstop. After a magical 2024 with the Mets, he's somewhat regressed. But with Bogaerts out, he and McCoy will have to hold down shortstop. McCoy hasn't hit during his brief ML stints, yet logged an .804 OPS with 11 homers and 17 stolen bases at Triple-A El Paso. Iglesias - 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $54; 12-team NL: $7; McCoy - 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5
Jordan Lawlar, Diamondbacks: Lawlar, sidelined since late-June with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, was finally promoted on Friday. He saw action for two weeks in the minors after recovering from his injury and was called up with Pavin Smith (quad) hitting the IL. Lawlar will be in the lineup against every left-hander, and the club will mix-and-match against righties with Blaze Alexander's role to shift from primary starter at third to playing around the field. 12-team Mixed: $5; 15-team Mixed: $11; 12-team NL: $16
Andruw Monasterio, Brewers: Monasterio was mentioned last week and deserves another mention as he's been raking at the plate since taking over at shortstop in Joey Ortiz's absence. He extended his hit streak on Saturday to 10, during which he's gone 12-for-32 with six runs, two homers and four RBI. With Monasterio in the midst of this hot start, Brice Turang has remained at second. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $5; 12-team NL: $9 (upped bid from prior)
Jared Triolo, Pirates: Triolo continued his roll on Saturday by going 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs. For the month, he's gone 29-for-87 with 17 runs, two home runs and eight driven in over 27 outings. Triolo has struggled in the Majors, yet has thrived with additional playing time and should continue to play almost daily. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7
JJ Wetherholt, Cardinals: Wetherholt, selected seventh overall in 2024, has continued to rake at Triple-A Memphis. He began the year at Double-A Springfield and slashed .300/.425/.466 with seven home runs, 14 steals and a 40:44 K:BB over 62 games. Since moving up, Wetherholt has managed even better numbers at .331/.411.625 with 30 runs, nine homers and 21 RBI from 34 contests. He recently began seeing time at the hot corner after playing second and shortstop. St. Louis may opt not to call up Wetherholt, but he'd retain rookie eligibility when the rosters expand in September. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7 (same spec call up bid)
OUTFIELD
Harrison Bader, Phillies: Bader has been excellent since joining the Phillies at the deadline batting 21-for-71 with a .296/.378.465 line, 11 runs scored, two homers and six RBIs in 21 outings while playing a stellar center field. Bader should continue to start nearly every day. 12-team Mixed: $2; 15-team Mixed: $7; 12-team NL: $11 (if not rostered)
Jose Siri/Jesse Winker, Mets: Siri has been on the shelf since Apr. 17 due to a fractured left tibia while Winker has been out since mid-July with lower back inflammation, and both began rehab assignments this past week. With the Mets having acquired Cedric Mullins and Tyrone Taylor hot at the plate, they're in no rush to activate Siri. Winker is still experiencing intermittent back pain and his chances of returning this year will hinge upon his ability to manage the discomfort. Even if he comes back, he likely won't play much with Mark Vientos and Starling Marte ably handling DH. Both - 12-team Mixed: No; 15-team Mixed: No; 12-team NL: $5 (early injury return bid)
Tyrone Taylor, Mets: Taylor may be taking over again as the Mets' starting center fielder. Cedric Mullins has done almost nothing since coming over from Baltimore while Taylor has been on fire with three multi-hit efforts in his last seven games while going 10-for-21 (.476) with six RBI and six runs. Mullins could turn it around, but for now Taylor is the primary option in center. 12-team Mixed: $1; 15-team Mixed: $4; 12-team NL: $7
