With at least 5.0 yards per carry and blistering touchdown production in each of his three NFL seasons, Gibbs has a strong case as the most explosive from-scrimmage threat in the league. Last year brought decline for Detroit's offense as a whole, and while Gibbs' rushing efficiency eventually suffered down the stretch, he still finished with 5.0 YPC, 18 TDs (five receiving) and 1,839 yards from scrimmage, proving that he carries the Detroit offense rather than the other way around. The Lions traded David Montgomery to Houston and have so far only replaced him with Isiah Pacheco, who signed a guaranteed contract for one year and $1.81 million. As much as the Lions might want to avoid overworking Gibbs, their present depth chart hints at huge snap counts for the 5-foot-9, 199-pound superstar. Detroit's offensive line is undergoing notable transition for the second offseason in a row, this time due to the subtraction of long-time left tackle Taylor Decker. Superstar right tackle Penei Sewell should be up to the task of moving to the left side, allowing 17th overall pick Blake Miller to take over at right tackle after his four-year run as Clemson's starter in that same spot. The Lions and Gibbs (back) agreed to terms on a three-year extension Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The $67.5 million deal can be worth up to $75.75 million and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, barely surpassing Bijan Robinson's extension (three years, $66.75 million and $51 million guaranteed) with the Falcons from earlier this week to make the former the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Gibbs has racked up 3,768 yards from scrimmage and 38 touchdowns in 34 regular-season games over the last two campaigns, so the investment made in him by Detroit is warranted. He'll continue to operate as the engine of the Lions offense for the foreseeable future.

Gibbs' rookie season was already excellent and set him up for even higher expectations in 2024, yet it's safe to say Gibbs exceeded those expectations. He held up for all 17 weeks, including a three-game span in the fantasy playoffs when Gibbs took on a workhorse role while David Montgomery (knee) sat out. It's true that Gibbs wouldn't have had quite as many touches in 2024 if not for Montgomery's injury -- and in general the Lions prefer dividing touches between the two RBs -- but Gibbs was so dominant in Montgomery's absence that it may impact the workload split for 2025 under new offensive coordinator John Morton. As much as Gibbs' carry count might decline if Montgomery stays healthy, it's worth remembering that (A) Gibbs will likely always be among the league leaders in yards and touchdowns per carry, slightly offsetting any volume limitations, and (B) Gibbs showed a new level of pass-catching upside in 2024 and might push for 60-plus catches after logging 52 in both of his NFL seasons.
