Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gibbs' rookie season was impressive, and the scary thing is he doesn't even look like a finished product yet. More specifically, his pass-catching production almost certainly will improve in upcoming years. During Gibbs' rookie season, his rushing production unexpectedly stood out, including 5.2 YPC and 10 TDs on 182 carries. It now appears he's an even better runner than most projected last spring when the Lions shockingly selected him 12th overall to be the dual-threat complement to bruiser David Montgomery. If Gibbs is a better runner than expected and his receiving contributions eventually reach the levels expected all along, we could eventually be looking at a fantasy MVP sort of player, something like a smaller, faster Alvin Kamara. As the Lions showed in 2023, there's plenty of room for Gibbs and Montgomery to coexist, because the Detroit offense is built from the ground and piles up yardage and touchdowns behind an excellent offensive line. Just the same, Gibbs is one of the NFL's smaller running backs at 5-9, 200, and Montgomery is one of the league's best power runners, depriving Gibbs of massive workloads and consistent access to goal-line carries. Two rushing TDs in win
Gibbs rushed 14 times for 78 yards and two touchdowns and wasn't targeted in the Lions' 42-29 win over the Seahawks on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Although the lack of work in the passing game was less than ideal, Gibbs' fantasy managers had to be elated with seeing the talented back get two opportunities from inside the five-yard line that culminated in touchdowns, considering how often he's frequently passed over for David Montgomery in such scenarios. Gibbs went in from three yards and one yard out in the second quarter, his first trips to the end zone on the ground since Week 1. He's yet to crack the 100-yard threshold this season, but he's now on an impressive three-game run of efficient work on the ground that's seen him amass 245 yards on 43 carries. Gibbs now gets a chance for some early-season rest via a Week 5 bye before returning to action on the road Sunday, Oct. 13 against a short-handed Cowboys defense that's struggled to stop the run.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Gibbs isn't a realistic workhorse candidate at 199 pounds, and his carry count is likely to rank low among the top fantasy backs as a result, but the Alabama product is a unique threat as a receiver and could immediately establish himself as one of the best pass-catching backs of recent memory and distant future. With a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, Gibbs also has long-range speed to make big plays in space. He turned 134 collegiate targets into 104 receptions for 1,217 yards, good for a catch rate of 77.6 percent at 9.1 yards per target. You simply don't see that level of pass-catching efficiency over that amount of volume for a college RB. The Lions thought enough of Gibbs to draft him at 12th overall after trading down, later trading veteran RB D'Andre Swift to Philadelphia. They signed David Montgomery earlier in the offseason to replace Jamaal Williams, but Montgomery mostly figures to get the type of touches (short-yardage, between the tackles) that Gibbs isn't best suited for anyway. The Lions seem to view Gibbs/Montgomery as an upgraded version of the Swift/Williams duo that combined for 2,070 scrimmage yards and 25 TDs in 2022.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Nearing return to practice
Gibbs, sidelined by a hamstring injury, is likely to return to practice following the Lions' third preseason game Saturday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs has been sidelined for the last week, though coach Dan Campbell has consistently downplayed the issue. There was some hint that perhaps the second-year back could be slowed early in the season by the injury, as Campbell lamented Gibbs' lack of ability to practice and was non-committal about his game shape coming out of the extended layoff. There's little doubt that the team will work Gibbs into its Week 1 gameplan against the Rams, but David Montgomery could take on an expanded role early in the new campaign.
