Thairo Estrada

28-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
San Francisco Giants
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Estrada followed up his breakout 2022 season with another impressive campaign, though it was truncated by a broken left hand. He returned to slash just .268/.298/.390 in his final 51 games (.272/.327/.434 before the injury). Still, despite playing in 20 fewer games, Estrada matched his homer total and exceeded his stolen-base total from the year prior. His appeal takes a hit in OBP leagues since Estrada owns a career 5.1 BB%, but he's a plus defender and carries dual eligibility into the 2024 season (second base, shortstop). While Estrada's batted-ball numbers do little to excite, he's now turned in three straight years of above-average offensive production. With better luck on the health front, Estrada could reach 600 plate appearances for the first time in his career as an everyday presence in the Giants' middle infield. Read Past Outlooks

Estrada is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Estrada started the first 17 games of the season and will receive a breather Tuesday after going 7-for-16 with two doubles and two homers over the previous four games. Tyler Fitzgerald will man the keystone and bat ninth.

Hitting atop Giants' order
2BSan Francisco Giants
September 26, 2022
Estrada has hit in the top third of San Francisco's lineup in each of his last seven games.
ANALYSIS
Estrada has a .303/.404/.449 slash line since Aug. 27 and the Giants have moved him up in the order. The 26-year-old has been one of the most consistent bats for San Francisco this year while also making starts at four different positions. With 14 homers and 19 stolen bases, he's proven to be a valuable source of power and speed and is likely to retain a starting role in 2023.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2017
Estrada came into the season just hoping to make the roster and finished the season tied for 11th in steals while also hitting 14 homers. He was one of 51 players to pull such a double-double in 2022 and was arguably the most surprising one given he had never had a double-digit homer total at any stop of his professional career and had not swiped double-digit bases since the 2016 season. Injuries on the roster put Estrada at three different infield positions and he fell a game short qualifying as an outfielder for the draft. The Giants are already looking at him to be that Ben Zobrist-like player for 2023 now that he has shown can do more than just hold down the end of the bench. That versatility will help prop up his fantasy value as the overall profile still looks rather fringy despite the surprising numbers this past season.
With Tommy La Stella (Achilles surgery) still on the mend to open 2022, Estrada has a chance to see regular playing time early in the season. The 26-year-old middle infielder won the starting job at second base over Mauricio Dubon in spring training, though it's likely to just be a temporary everyday role. Estrada was solid with a .273/.333/.479 slash line in 132 plate appearances last season at the major-league level. He also tore up Triple-A with a .333/.399/.538 line in 233 plate appearances with Sacramento. The playing time should be there even when the Giants are fully healthy -- manager Gabe Kapler often utilizes platoons, and Estrada's ability to move around the infield should open up more opportunities for him, though the right-handed hitter will likely be on the short side of a timeshare if he ends up in one.
A diminutive middle infielder from Venezuela, Estrada held his own in his first year of full-season ball. Estrada slashed .290/.346/.391 in 118 games between Low-A and High-A. The 20-year-old showed some surprising pop despite standing at just 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, cranking eight home runs and driving in 49 runs. Home run power is not expected to be a consistent part of his offensive skill set, though. Estrada's above-average speed was on display, as he swiped 18 bases in 2016. A contact hitter, Estrada may be hurt by the bevy of shortstops and second basemen ahead of him in the Yankees' system, although he has shown the ability to play multiple positions on the diamond. He will likely return to High-A to begin the 2017 season.
