Alex Vesia

Alex Vesia

29-Year-Old PitcherRP
Los Angeles Dodgers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Vesia has maintained a fairly static pitch mix in recent years without much fluctuation in usage of his fastball (63 percent usage), slider (32 percent) and changeup (five percent, exclusive to right-handed batters). While he lost a tick of velocity on his four-seamer (93.4 mph average velocity) and slider (85 mph), opposing hitters struggled to square up against these offerings. Vesia permitted a mere .106 BA and .136 SLG on his slider, which produced a 40 percent whiff rate. Overall, strikeouts were well above average at 33.1 percent (95th percentile) while walks remained an issue. Vesia had one of the highest discrepancies (-1.69) between ERA (1.76) and FIP (3.45) thanks to an extremely low BABIP (.195) and 64.7 fly ball percentage that was highest among relief pitchers. He can still be effective, however, as he enters his age-29 season as the Dodgers' top (non-closer) lefty out of the bullpen. Read Past Outlooks

Secures second save
PLos Angeles Dodgers
May 30, 2025
Vesia allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 8-5 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Vesia got the save chance after Tanner Scott defused a two-on, two-out situation in the eighth inning. Both pitchers struggled in their last outings Wednesday versus the Guardians, and it's at least intriguing that Vesia was called upon to handle the top of the Yankees' order, which he did successfully after pitching around Trent Grisham's leadoff single. Vesia has allowed four runs in May, all via home runs, over 10.1 innings. He's at two saves, 10 holds, a 3.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 35:9 K:BB through 25 innings. With Scott blowing three saves over his last five appearances, Vesia looks to be the early candidate to take over the ninth inning should manager Dave Roberts officially make a change at closer. Even if that happens, it could lead to a committee scenario, especially once Kirby Yates (hamstring) and Michael Kopech (shoulder) are ready to return.

Stat Review
How does Alex Vesia compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9

  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
2021
Vesia struggled on the surface in 2023 in large part due to .354 BABIP and 72.6 percent strand rate. However, he still managed a 21.7 K-BB% and should be in for a bounceback campaign in a potential high-leverage role out of the Dodgers' bullpen in 2024.
Vesia continues to fly a bit under the radar as one of the game's top left-handed relievers. His 94 mph 4-seamer was one of the best in the league, producing a top-20 Statcast run value (-14) for that pitch type. His fastball was responsible for 53 of his career-high 79 strikeouts, while his 34.8% K% was in the 97th percentile. He also got plenty of whiffs (92nd percentile), leading to a 73.8% in-zone contact percentage that was 4th-best among qualified relievers. Vesia was particularly sharp in the second half, as 26 of his final 27 appearances were scoreless. From July 22 onwards, he compiled an impressive 0.36 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 40 strikeouts over 25.2 innings. Vesia will continue to serve as the Dodgers' top lefty out of the bullpen, but don't dismiss the possibility that he becomes part of the mix for saves, especially if he continues to improve his command (4.0 BB/9 for his career).
Vesia arrived in Los Angeles last February as part of the Dylan Floro trade and opened 2021 in the minors. The southpaw bounced between Triple-A and Los Angeles several times before showing he had nothing left to prove at Triple-A, fanning 19 hitters over nine innings at that level before he got the call for good near the All-Star break. Vesia was outstanding for the Dodgers, quickly overtaking Victor Gonzalez as the team's top lefty out of the pen. He finished the year with a 2.25 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 12.2 K/9 over 40 innings, and his 17.8% SwStr% would have ranked among the leaders if he qualified. He attacks left-handed hitters with his slider and only allowed one hit on the pitch all year, while blanking hitters altogether on his changeup. The lefty turns 26 in April and needs to improve his control (5.0 BB/9) to take the next step forward, but initial returns forecast a promising high-leverage career.
Vesia is a player whose minor-league statistics get your attention. In 100 minor-league innings, he's allowed just 75 hits with a 138:26 K:BB while allowing just four home runs. Stats such as those would lead one to believe Vesia has a triple-digit fastball or some nasty breaking ball, but neither is true. Vesia has a rather average fastball, but he hides it well and it sneaks up on hitters. His changeup is his best pitch, and it is why he was able to produce such lofty strikeout totals in the minor leagues. He made it from Division II college to the major leagues in two years thanks to embracing a role in the bullpen. Expect to see him in the majors a fair amount in 2021 assuming he can throw more strikes than he did during his brief time in the big leagues in 2020.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Rediscovers dominant fastball
PLos Angeles Dodgers
June 12, 2024
Vesia has given up just six hits in 62 at-bats against his four-seam fastball this season.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander tallied a save and 16 holds with a 2.15 ERA in 2022, but he was less reliable in 2023 with a 4.35 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Opposing batters hit .273 against Vesia's fastball last season, but he's been dominant with the pitch early in 2024. Evan Phillips remains locked in as the Dodgers' closer, but Vesia should continue to fill a high-leverage role and has two saves and four holds this year.
