2026 Fantasy Outlook
Painter established himself as an elite pitching prospect when he climbed from Single-A to Double-A in 2022 -- his age-19 season. An arm injury that eventually resulted in July 2023 Tommy John surgery wiped out his 2023 and 2024 seasons. He returned in 2025 with a rehab assignment at Single-A and a late-April assignment to Triple-A. While he was drafted in many redraft formats last year, Painter never earned a promotion from Triple-A, logging a 5.26 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and a 13.7 K-BB% in 106.2 innings across 26 starts. He had never logged a K-BB% below 29 percent prior to last season, and his 24.4 K-BB% during his rehab assignment at Single-A was a far cry from the 35.6 K-BB% he registered there in 2022. There's not much cause for optimism in 2026 if we only go off Painter's 2025 showing, but there's a chance that things will be different in his second full season back from TJS. He doesn't turn 23 until April and finished the year healthy without a dramatic drop in pure stuff, although there was a notable dip in his precision. The Phillies will give him every opportunity to make good on his potential, so those who like buying low on high-upside talents may find Painter's price in 2026 appealing. Read Past Outlooks
Takes no-hit bid into sixth inning
Painter (2-8) earned the win against the Cardinals on Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out six.
Analysis
Painter was authoring the finest start of his young career before starting to show signs of fatigue, carrying a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. It was still an encouraging performance despite St. Louis' two-run sixth frame, as the right-hander has now yielded two runs or fewer in three straight starts since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Painter will be looking to build on Monday's showing over the weekend in Minnesota, where he'll bring a 6.27 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 69:31 K:BB over 80.1 innings for the Phillies.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Prior to the Arizona Fall League, Painter hadn't pitched since 2022 due to July 2023 Tommy John surgery, yet he led qualified AFL pitchers in ERA and WHIP heading into the final week of play. He used all four of his plus pitches this fall, with his four-seam fastball up to 99 mph and averaging 97 mph. His stuff is all the way back, and so is his control (two walks in 13 IP), which was a big part of what made Painter such a special prospect before surgery. Painter will be eased into things at Triple-A and the team has mentioned July as a target for when he could join the big-league rotation. He threw 103.2 innings in 2022, and will finish with just under 20 innings this fall, so a capped, unpredictable workload is the main drawback with the 21-year-old righty in redraft leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Off limits in trade talks
The Phillies are refusing "to even entertain the thought" of trading Painter at this year's deadline, Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb of The Athletic report.
Analysis
The Phillies are known to be looking for a high-end reliever and at least one bat, but it sounds like there's zero chance of them including Painter in a trade before Thursday's deadline. Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Painter tossed 6.1 innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts in his latest start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. He is expected to be a factor with the Phillies during the final two months of the season, whether that's as a starter or reliever.
