2024 Fantasy Outlook
Chapman finished with 100-plus strikeouts for the fifth time in his career, but for the first time since 2015. The veteran showcased increased velocity early in the season, hitting 103.8 mph on the radar gun with his devastating sinker (101.1 mph average) that yielded a 43.3% whiff rate, the league's highest mark for that pitch type. Walks were still an issue, but Chapman still had the third-highest K-BB percentage among qualified relievers at 26.9%. Ultimately, the southpaw proved he was effective enough during his age-35 season to maintain a high-leverage role for both Kansas City and Texas. Chapman only had six saves last year, and it seems unlikely that he will take away closing duties from David Bednar after signing a one-year deal with the Pirates in January. The Cuban Missile can still be an asset in leagues scoring holds, NL-only formats and even deep mixed leagues for his ratios and strikeouts. Read Past Outlooks
Perfect for fourth save
Chapman picked up the save Thursday against Milwaukee, striking out one batter during a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman inherited a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning and required only nine pitches to retire Christian Yelich, Willy Adames and Sal Frelick in order. Chapman has consistently seen ninth-inning work since David Bednar (oblique) got injured June 22, but Chapman's allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and six walks across 7.2 innings with three saves in four opportunities during that stretch.

After still showing signs of dominance during the 2021 season, last year proved that Chapman's days of being an elite closer are probably over. The southpaw was limited to just 36.1 innings after two trips to the IL, first for an Achilles injury, then for a leg infection that developed after getting a tattoo. Chapman struggled when healthy, as his 4.46 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 26.9% strikeout rate were the worst marks of his career. Combine the latter with a bloated 17.5% walk rate that would have been the worst among relievers if he pitched enough innings to qualify, his K-BB percentage was merely in the single digits at 9.4%. The 35-year-old still throws hard, averaging 97.7 mph on his 4-seamer, but there may not be a huge market for the free-agent. Chapman was left off the Yankees playoff roster after missing a team workout and may be more of a headache at this point of his career than an asset.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Controlling run game
Chapman has picked off three baserunners in his past four appearances, and those three successful pickoffs lead the league, reports Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander surrendered 15 stolen bases last season and entered the year with 14 pickoffs in 14 big-league campaigns, but he and the Pirates have recently emphasized controlling the run game. Chapman has been up-and-down this season with a 4.50 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 22:14 K:BB across 12 innings, and his improved pickoff move should be particularly useful given the walks he's issued.
