Getting crushed in Double-A
Walston has a 7.12 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 35:17 K:BB through 36.2 innings (eight starts) for Double-A Amarillo.
ANALYSIS
After Walston dominated in High-A to open the year, there was reason to expect more than this following his promotion in early May. The southpaw has given up 53 hits, including seven home runs, across those 36.2 frames since his promotion. That said, he's still a few days shy of his 21st birthday, and Walston struggled some after being promoted to High-A last year before coming back stronger in 2022, so he may just need some adjustment time.

The youngest player at Arizona's alternate training site, Walston proved up to the challenge, showing an improved changeup and improved command against older hitters. A 6-foot-5, 195-pound southpaw, there's still some projection possible with Walston, even though his velocity already ticked up from the low-90s to the mid-90s after signing for $2.45 million in 2019. His plus slider is arguably his best pitch, and it is important that his changeup and curveball continue to improve in the coming years. He won't turn 20 until late June, so it's too early to say anything definitive with regards to his floor or ceiling. That said, athletic, tall lefties with mid-90s fastball velocity and good command of a four-pitch mix are very rare. He should spend the year at Low-A and High-A, where going deep into starts and building up his workload will be a priority.
