Likely to pitch in bulk Sunday
PNew York Mets
July 4, 2025
Waddell is expected to make a spot start or serve as a bulk reliever Sunday against the Yankees, though the Mets haven't finalized their pitching plans, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
The Mets called up the lefty from Triple-A Syracuse last week, and he's proceeded to make a pair of three-inning relief appearances since then, with his most recent outing coming Wednesday against the Brewers. Assuming he's not needed out of the bullpen Friday and Saturday, Waddell looks as though he'll be called upon to contribute in Sunday's series finale in some capacity. Though he's made eight starts with Syracuse this season, Waddell hasn't covered more than five innings at any level since May 28, so the Mets will likely look to manage his workload while he takes the hill Sunday on three days' rest.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Waddell made his major-league debut for the Pirates in August of 2020, but he was waived by the team during the offseason. However, he was claimed by the Twins at the end of October and should compete for a bullpen role in the majors during spring training. The southpaw worked in a middle-relief role for Pittsburgh, allowing one run over 3.1 innings across his two appearances. His strikeout rate exceeded 20% in the minors in 2019 despite a slightly below-average fastball velocity, but he's had some issues with command in recent years. Despite his success over a very small major-league sample in 2020, his 6.12 ERA over 48 outings (22 starts) over the past two seasons at Triple-A suggests that he could experience some growing pains against top-tier talent if he pitches in the big leagues once again. Waddell has minimal fantasy value in 2021 as a middle reliever who still has to prove himself in the majors.
