Takes first loss
Flexen (5-1) took the loss Friday against the Yankees after giving up three earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters over four innings.
Analysis
Flexen made his first start of the campaign Friday after spending most of the season working as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. He kept the Yankees off the scoreboard for two innings, but back-to-back singles to lead off the third followed by an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly and a Cody Bellinger two-run blast gave New York a lead it wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game. Flexen's ERA still sits at 1.47 on the year despite his rough performance Friday, and he'll likely get another opportunity to start after the All-Star break with Jameson Taillon (calf) set to remain out until August.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
Flexen was a fun story in 2021 returning from pitching in the KBO and becoming a tremendous fantasy value for those who threw a late dart on him with 14 wins and solid ratios. The expected stats let us know that Flexen would have a very tough time repeating his success in 2022, and they were right. His ERA did not balloon much, but he did lose his spot in the rotation as he struggled with walks and allowed too many baserunners. He did have nine quality starts and allowed multiple homers in 4 of his outings, but he was out of the rotation by early August while ending the season on a rather solid run in relief. He has the repertoire of a swing man whose changeup and slider work best when he gets ahead in the count as his fastball was too hittable last season. He should resume a spot in the back end of the rotation for Seattle while once again serving as a streaming fantasy option depending on the matchup as he is far from a set-it-and-forget-it fantasy pitcher.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely trade chip
Flexen is a candidate to be traded by the White Sox this summer, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.
Analysis
The 29-year-old joined Chicago on a one-year deal in December and would likely be an affordable rental piece. Flexen posted an 8.78 ERA in his first three starts of the season, but his 4.54 ERA in eight outings since is more palatable. The right-hander won't be on the fantasy radar without additional improvement, regardless of whether he's traded.
