2023 Fantasy Outlook
The secondaries haven't developed enough for Abbott to compensate for a below-average fastball, and as he enters his age-27 season, the right-hander is running out of chances. A second-round pick by the Cubs in 2017, Abbott landed with Washington on a waiver claim in May after Chicago designated him for assignment. He bagged the changeup last season and went with a three-pitch mix of fastball-slider-curveball. The slider and curveball failed to do their job although Statcast suggests the curve deserved better (.333 BA, .181 xBA, .485 SLG, .293 xSLG). Abbott should get to add to his 10 career MLB starts in 2023 despite his 0-5 record in 16 appearances (nine starts) as a 26-year-old rookie. Read Past Outlooks

Moves to Triple-A
The Nationals optioned Abbott to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Abbott has pitched well this spring but nonetheless finds himself on the outside looking in for a roster spot. He figures to serve in a swingman role again for the Nationals this season.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Some observers cap Abbott's potential success as a big-league starter on the basis of his average fastball, but the right-hander has thus far proven himself as a minor leaguer, compiling a 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 over 275.2 frames. He was superb in his first Double-A stint in 2019, leading the Southern League with 166 strikeouts and winning the Cubs' Minor League Pitcher of the Year award. What Abbott lacks in velocity he compensates for with good command and a four-pitch arsenal that he mixes up well. His slider is his most effective offering, particularly against right-handers, and he has shown some success going to his curveball against left-handers. Abbott was added to the 40-man roster in November, solidifying his outlook as a future rotation option for the Cubs. He could compete for a back-end starting spot in spring training but is more likely to begin the season at Triple-A.
