                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Martinez has become a highly coveted pitcher in Major League Baseball in the years since he returned from his stint in Japan, so much so that the Reds extended the $21 million qualifying offer to keep him for 2025. The right-hander accepted and will return to Cincinnati after setting career highs in wins (10) and innings (142.1) last season. More of a swingman early in the campaign, Martinez moved to the rotation for good in early August and was brilliant down the stretch with a 0.83 ERA over 32.2 innings in September. What Martinez lacks in terms of fastball velocity, he makes for in quality and variety of secondary pitches. His control reached a whole new level last season, but some giveback with his walk rate should be expected. Regardless, if he sticks in the rotation all season, Martinez could easily set another new career high in wins. Back in bullpen over weekend
Martinez retired the lone batter he faced in relief and collected his second hold of the season in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Cardinals.
                  Analysis
Martinez had made four straight appearances as a starter from Aug. 9 through Aug. 26, but his last two outings have come out of the bullpen. Though the Reds scratched Nick Lodolo (illness) ahead of Tuesday's 12-9 loss to the Blue Jays, Martinez wasn't called upon for a spot start, as Cincinnati instead had Scott Barlow open the contest before he was followed by five other relievers. Cincinnati could consider moving Martinez back into the rotation if Lodolo ends up requiring a stint on the injured list, though the expectation at this time is that Lodolo will be ready to go the next time the Reds need a fifth starter.

Martinez, who opted out of the final two years of his contract with San Diego in November, recently agreed to terms with Cincinnati that includes an increased salary and opt-out after the 2024 season. The 33-year-old mixes five pitches effectively, with his 80 mph changeup (46.5% whiff) and curveball his best offerings. He produced a career-best 23 percent strikeout rate last season to supplement his elite ground ball rate (53.8%). Martinez has been excellent since his return to the States in 2022 and is capable of starting, closing, setup duties or long relief. His versatility should benefit the Reds pitching staff, but it's worth noting he performed better across nine starts (2.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP over 42.2 innings) last year than he did over 54 relief appearances (4.12 ERA, 1.37 WHIP over 67.2 innings).

                  Extension talks not expected
The Reds and Martinez are not expected to resume contract extension talks after the pitcher accepted the team's one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
                  Analysis
The two sides engaged in long-term contract negotiations prior to the qualifying offer being extended but made little progress.
