2023 Fantasy Outlook
The Padres removed Avila from their 40-man roster last June, but he made his way back on following a strong finished at Triple-A El Paso. The 26-year-old has plenty of experience both as a starter and a reliever and has missed bats in both roles. What he hasn't done is throw strikes consistently, especially not since making it back from Tommy John surgery in 2021. The bullpen would seem to be the easier path to a significant role with the Padres for Avila and he would have some work to do before being trusted in leveraged spots. Read Past Outlooks

Picks up win in bulk role
Avila improved to 2-2 on the season in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Athletics, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk and striking out five.
ANALYSIS
Avila was deployed in bulk relief, entering the game after Nick Martinez opened the contest with three shutout frames. The 26-year-old Avila has now sandwiched a pair of scoreless outings around a disastrous start against the Dodgers on Monday, when he allowed seven earned runs over 2.2 innings. Avila should retain a spot in San Diego's rotation during the upcoming week, though he could be deployed behind Martinez once again when his turn comes up next weekend versus St. Louis.
