Yahoo DFS Basketball: Sunday Picks

Yahoo DFS Basketball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Basketball series.

There are only five games in the NBA on Sunday, and just three of those will make up the main evening slate on Yahoo. While that leaves us with limited options, that doesn't mean you can't emerge victorious. Here are some players to target, as well as a few to avoid, while creating your entry.

GUARDS

Justise Winslow, MIA at MIN ($21): Winslow showed an ability to contribute in multiple areas last season, averaging 12.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.1 steals in 30 minutes a game. With Jimmy Butler (personal) out, he's logged 37 and 41 minutes, respectively, in their first two games this season. The end result was him scoring at least 36.1 Yahoo points in both contests. With Butler out again Sunday, Winslow makes a lot of sense at this reasonable price.

Kendrick Nunn, MIA at MIN ($11): Speaking of players who have benefited from Butler's absence, Nunn has scored 35.9 and 38.3 Yahoo points, respectively, in their first two games. His main contribution has come in the scoring column with him averaging 21 points per contest. At near the minimum price, he's almost too good to pass up.

Guard to Avoid

Andrew Wiggins, MIN vs. MIA ($26): Wiggins doesn't normally have problems scoring, averaging at least 16.9 points in every season that he's been in the league. The problem is that he doesn't provide much else. He's only scored 29.6 and 28.8 Yahoo points, respectively in two games this season despite averaging 18.5 points across those contests. Facing the Heat's tough defense makes him someone to avoid at this price.

FORWARDS

PJ Washington, CHA at LAL ($17): The Hornets came crashing back down to Earth after pulling off a surprising win over the Bulls in their first game of the season, losing to the Timberwolves by 22 points on Friday. Washington exploded for 27 points in their first game, hitting seven of 11 three-pointers. While he only scored 10 points the following game, he did haul in 10 rebounds. With his playing time secure moving forward, look for him to once again be a valuable contributor.

Kelly Olynyk, MIA at MIN ($11): Olynyk is rarely going to provide hefty stat lines, but that doesn't mean he's someone to completely ignore. The Heat don't have a ton of quality size up front, so his playing time is not in jeopardy. He's been able to score at least 23.6 Yahoo points in both of their first two games, making him a viable target at near the minimum price.

Forward to Avoid

Jarrett Culver, MIN vs. MIA ($14): While the Timberwolves hope that Culver will be a big part of their future, he's not out of the gate during his rookie season. With the likes of Wiggins, Josh Okogie, Treveon Graham and Jake Layman among the Timberwolves' options at shooting guard and small forward, Culver hasn't played more than 16 minutes in either of their first two games. That's not enough playing time to warrant considering him in DFS.

CENTERS

Hassan Whiteside, POR at DAL ($26): Whiteside seems to have adjusted to his new team quickly, providing two dominant performances out of the game. He first took it to a good defensive team in the Nuggets, scoring 16 points to go along with 19 rebounds and two blocks. Then he had 22 points, nine rebounds and another block in his second game against the Kings. The Mavericks will be thin up front without Dwight Powell (hamstring), leaving Whiteside with another favorable opportunity to thrive.

Bam Adebayo, MIA at MIN ($20): With Whiteside no longer in the picture for the Heat, Adebayo has taken over as their main man in the middle. He has the ability to contribute in multiple areas, which he showed Saturday by posting 19 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and one block against the Bucks. It's difficult to get excited about any of the really cheap options at center for this slate, so if you want to fade the high-priced options, Adebayo stands out in the second tier.

Center to Avoid

Dwight Howard, LAL vs. CHA ($16): In the grand scheme of things, $16 isn't a lot to spend on one player. However, it's way too much for Howard. He's stuck in a time share with JaVale McGee, leaving him to record five points and 13 rebounds over the Lakers' first two games, combined. Even with how poorly the Hornets have played defensively, Howard is not someone to target.
