McLaughlin saw action in 19 of Minnesota's first 53 games, averaging 6.7 points and 3.8 assists per game. McLaughlin started the season with the Iowa Wolves of the G League, where he averaged 16.6 points and 6.0 assists per game over 23 G League contests. He made his NBA debut Nov. 6 against Memphis, scoring five points and adding two assists in almost 22 minutes of play. On Dec. 23 against Golden State, McLaughlin broke out, scoring 19 points while adding four assists and three steals. McLaughlin secured a spot in the Timberwolves' rotation in January, playing in 13 straight games for the team after being inactive for the previous five. He recorded his first career double-double on Feb. 8 against the Clippers, scoring 24 points and adding 11 assists in a Timberwolves victory. McLaughlin started again on Feb. 23 against the Nuggets, playing 34 minutes and posting another double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds). Over his final 11 games of the season, McLaughlin averaged 9.3 points, 4.7 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 20.7 minutes per game. He went for 14 points, nine assists and three rebounds against Orlando on Mar. 6. In his last game of the season, McLaughlin posted five points, three assists, and two rebounds in a loss to the Rockets. Minnesota did not participate in the NBA bubble following the season's hiatus.
