Is sports betting legal in Mississippi?

Last Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Fact Checked By: Josh Collacchi

Yes. Sports betting officially launched in Mississippi in August 2018 and is only legal at licensed casinos that have received authorization. The state had no trouble approving regulations June 2018 because sports betting was technically legalized in 2017 when it was quietly included in the fantasy sports bill.

While Mississippi was one of the first states to offer sports betting, it can only be done on physical premises, which is why most online sportsbooks have yet to make a mark in the state. Some online casinos have the option for mobile sports betting, but since it can only be done on the premises, not many have bothered. That rule may change in the future, but as of 2020, there was nothing in the works for the state to legalize online betting.

Daily Fantasy Sports were legalized March 2017, establishing a permanent framework of regulations for operators to work. Most notably, that bill also legalized sports betting, something anti-gambling lawmakers didn't appreciate at the time.
