DeChambeau finished in a share of second place after a one-under 70 in the final round of the PGA Championship.
ANALYSISDeChambeau has been perhaps the best player in the major championships in the last two years with now five top-six finishes in six starts, but only one of those was a victory. DeChambeau felt like this was another one that just got away from him. After 16 holes in the third round, the two-time U.S. Open champion held the outright lead, but followed with a double-bogey on the par-3 17th hole to fall down the leaderboard. Combine that with a five-under finish on
Scottie Scheffler's final five holes, and DeChambeau was forced to have to make up six shots in the final day. DeChambeau missed a lot of chances in the middle of his round that could have really put even more pressure on Scheffler, who was struggling with his swing on the front-nine. At the end of the day, it just wasn't to be this week for DeChambeau. He unsurprisingly led the field in SG: Off-the-Tee, but was only 47th in SG: Approach. DeChambeau certainly will have some things he wants to get worked out with his iron game before he defends the U.S. Open next month.
