Another close call in a major
May 18, 2025
DeChambeau finished in a share of second place after a one-under 70 in the final round of the PGA Championship.
ANALYSIS
DeChambeau has been perhaps the best player in the major championships in the last two years with now five top-six finishes in six starts, but only one of those was a victory. DeChambeau felt like this was another one that just got away from him. After 16 holes in the third round, the two-time U.S. Open champion held the outright lead, but followed with a double-bogey on the par-3 17th hole to fall down the leaderboard. Combine that with a five-under finish on Scottie Scheffler's final five holes, and DeChambeau was forced to have to make up six shots in the final day. DeChambeau missed a lot of chances in the middle of his round that could have really put even more pressure on Scheffler, who was struggling with his swing on the front-nine. At the end of the day, it just wasn't to be this week for DeChambeau. He unsurprisingly led the field in SG: Off-the-Tee, but was only 47th in SG: Approach. DeChambeau certainly will have some things he wants to get worked out with his iron game before he defends the U.S. Open next month.
