What to Watch: Week 9 in College Football (Part II)

3:30 PM ET CBS: Florida 4-3 vs Georgia 4-4 (-2.5) - The play of the Gators and the Bulldogs this season has given their fans plenty to think drink about at the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party."  The Florida offense has been wretched, ranking 73rd rushing and 82nd passing.  Here are their drive summaries from their 7-10 loss to Miss St... 3 plays (punt), 3 plays (punt), 6 plays (interception), 6 plays (turnover on downs), 15 plays (field goal missed), 6 plays (punt), 13 plays (rushing TD), 3 plays (punt), 7 plays (fumble), and 14 plays (game tying field goal missed).  Unfortunately, kicker Caleb Sturgis will miss this game with a hairline fracture in his vertebrae (ouch), so the kicking game won't get any better.  RB/WR Chris Rainey, who previously sent death threat text messages to his girlfriend, will be back for this game.  For the Bulldogs, I think they're headed in the right direction with frosh QB Aaron Murray.  Murray is 22nd in the nation in QB passer rating (156.96) and is tied for the fewest INTs in the SEC (3).  It's no coincidence that since stud WR A.J. Green has returned, the team has won 3 out of their 4 games.  The Gators have won 10 of the last 12 in this series.

Gators Offense: 329.7 yards/game (89th), 5.1 yards/play (84th), & 42.2|PERCENT| 3rd Down (42nd)

3:30 PM ET ABC/ESPN: #5 Michigan State 8-0 @ #18 Iowa 5-2 (-6.5) - The Spartans face maybe their toughest opponent this weekend, when they travel to Iowa City.  The Hawkeyes have the perfect defense to shutdown the Spartans run game.  They are stout up front with a slew of NFL prospects including senior DE Adrian Clayborn.  QB Kirk Cousins' match-up against the Hawkeyes 52nd ranked pass defense will be huge.  In the 2nd half of games, Iowa has the 86th best passing defense in terms of yards allowed (819 yards) and QBs are completing 60.6|PERCENT| of their passes, which ranks 81st nationally.  This is when Cousins is at his best, as he has the 4th highest QB passer rating (192.52) and the 5th best completion percentage (75.0|PERCENT|) in the 2nd half of games.  Opposing QB Ricky Stanzi is no slouch, as he has the 2nd highest QB passer rating (174.87) this season.  The Spartans pass defense is ranked 62nd, but they have the 5th most picks of any defense (13) and QBs are only completing 55.3|PERCENT| of their passes against them, which is 26th best.  Northwestern ran for 170 yards and 3 TDs against them last week, so Iowa's RB Adam Robinson could be in for a nice day.  The Spartans have lost 6 in a row in Iowa City.

Spartans Offense: 448.8 yards/game (22nd), 7.0 yards/play (12th), & 37.9|PERCENT| 3rd Down (74th)

3:30 PM ET ABC/ESPN: #6 Missouri 7-0 @ #14 Nebraska 6-1 (-7.5) - Much like Michigan State, Missouri is going on the road this weekend to protect their undefeated record.  Junior QB Blaine Gabbert is the nations' 16th leading passer at 271.3 ypg.  Last week against Oklahoma he was 30/42 for 308 yards and 1 TD.  Against the "Blackshirts" he'll have a much, much tougher time.  The Cornhuskers are giving up the 3rd fewest passing yards this season (140.7 ypg) and opposing QBs have the 2nd lowest completion percentage (48.1|PERCENT|).  The Tigers defense will have have their hands full with frosh QB Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska run game.  The Cornhuskers average 290.0 rushing yards per game, which is 5th most nationally.  Last week against Oklahoma State, Martinez showed that he's coming along as a passer as he threw for 323 yards, 5 TDs, and 0 INTs.  Missouri's pass defense isn't anywhere as bad as Oklahoma State's, but they have given up at least 240 passing yards in 4 straight games.  The Cornhuskers have won 7 of their last 8 at home against the Tigers.

Tigers Offense: 424.9 yards/game (32nd), 5.9 yards/play (38th), & 37.5|PERCENT| 3rd Down (79th)

6:00 PM ET ESPN2: #1 Auburn 8-0 (-7) @ Ole Miss 3-4 - Auburn has a weak spot and that weak spot is their pass defense.  If you can exploit that match-up, you give yourself a decent chance at winning the game.  Does Ole Miss have the weapons to do just this?  Maybe.  Senior QB Jeremiah Masoli is coming off a game against Arkansas where he threw for 327 yards, 3 TDs, and 0 INTs.  On the season, he's completed 56.5|PERCENT| of his passes for 180.0 ypg.  The WR corps has senior Markeith Summers, who had 104 receiving yards and 2 TDs in said game against Arkansas.  Outside of this game however, the Rebels passing offense has been pretty tame with just 135.8 ypg passing in their 4 previous games against Vandy, Fresno State, Kentucky, and Alabama.  So is this passing offense the one from last week or the one that's been showing up against most of their opponents?  You can try to run against Auburn, but you won't get far.  They're giving up just 103.4 ypg on the ground, which is 16th best in the nation.  Head Coach Houston Nutt has a reputation for winning big games at Ole Miss with wins over LSU and Florida, but he had much better offenses those seasons.  As for Auburn's offense, it's all about Cam Newton.  If you don't know about him by now, you haven't been watching college football.  I highly doubt Ole Miss' defense is going to be able to contain him.  The Rebels are 4-23 all time against Auburn.

Tigers Offense: 486.8 yards/game (10th), 7.3 yards/play (6th), & 47.1|PERCENT| 3rd Down (25th)
QB: JR Cam Newton - 170.5 ypg passing, 13 TDs, 5 INTs, & 65.2|PERCENT| comp.; 134.6 ypg rushing & 14 TDs

7:00 PM ET FSN: #25 Baylor 6-2 @ Texas 4-3 (-7.5) - My how the tables have turned.  Texas is coming off of a 21-28 loss to Iowa State, giving them three losses in their last four games, while Baylor is 6-2, coming off a 47-42 win against then BCS ranked Kansas State.  Now before you go thinking this Baylor team is poised to pull the upset, realize that their other five wins have come against Sam Houston State, Buffalo, Rice, Kansas, and Colorado, who have a combined record of 9-20 (and that's not including Sam Houston State).  Their sophomore QB, Robert Griffin, has feasted on their soft schedule.  He ranks 7th in passing ypg (296.6), 15th in QB passer rating (159.54), 20th in completion percentage (66.7|PERCENT|) and that's not even taking into account his ability to make plays with his feet (40.8 ypg rushing).  The Longhorns wish they were getting that kind of production from their QB, as their offense has sputtered all season long.  Sophomore QB Garrett Gilbert is 93rd in the nation in QB passer rating (113.28) and 58th in completion percentage (60.1|PERCENT|).  Those numbers should rise this weekend as the Bears defense is mediocre at best, allowing opposing QB to complete 63.7|PERCENT| of their passes, which is 20th worst nationally.  The Longhorns are 73-22-4 all time against the Bears.

Bears Offense: 510.8 yards/game (5th), 7.3 yards/play (6th), & 41.8|PERCENT| 3rd Down (45th)
QB: SO Robert Griffin - 296.6 ypg passing, 18 TDs, 4 INTs, & 66.7|PERCENT| comp.; 48.0 ypg rushing & 6 TDs

RB: JR Terrance Ganaway - 27.1 ypg
WR: JR Kendall Wright - 81.0 ypg & 5 TDs

Pass (84th): 234.9 ypg, 9 TDs, & 8 INTs

7:00 PM ET Versus: #13 Stanford 6-1 (-7.5) @ Washington 3-4 - Luck vs Locker was supposed to be a battle between two QBs who were vying to be the top pick in next year's NFL draft.  Seven games into the season and Luck is right on schedule, while Locker is still trying to find himself.  Luck is 8th in the nation in QB passer rating (165.43), 21st in completion percentage (66.5|PERCENT|), and a huge reason why  Stanford is 6-1 with a shot at a BCS bowl.  Locker, on the other hand, is 52nd in QB passer rating (131.37), 83rd in completion percentage (56.5|PERCENT|), and trying to recover from the multiple injuries and illness he's had this season.  Don't get me wrong, Locker has had great moments this season, like his game winning drive against USC and a 35-34 win against Oregon State, where he threw for 286 yards and 5 TDs.  However, he's also had games where he came up completely flat, like his 4-20 performance against Nebraska.  Some of that will be forgotten if he can come up big in this game.  That shouldn't be too tough as the Stanford defense just gave up 298 yards passing and 4 TDs to Washington State last week.  As for Luck, he should have no trouble carving up a Huskies defense that is quite simply, awful (98th in the nation).  Stanford has won 4 of the last 5 against the Huskies.

Cardinal Offense: 466.4 yards/game (15th), 6.7 yards/play (15th), & 57.5|PERCENT| 3rd Down (2nd)
QB: JR Andrew Luck - 246.9 ypg passing, 19 TDs, 5 INTs, & 66.5|PERCENT| comp.; 36.1 ypg rushing & 2 TDs
RB: SO Stepfan Taylor - 89.1 ypg rushing & 5 TDs; 30.4 ypg receiving & 1 TD
RB: SO Tyler Gaffney - 38.0 ypg & 3 TDs
WR: SR Doug Baldwin - 57.4 ypg & 6 TDs
WR: SR Ryan Whalen - 40.4 ypg & 2 TDs
TE: SR Coby Fleener - 31.0 ypg & 4 TDs

Huskies Defense: 424.0 yards/game (98th), 6.2 yards/play (103rd), & 44.1|PERCENT| 3rd Down (95th)
Run (104th): 202.7 ypg & 20 TDs
Pass (73rd): 221.3 ypg, 9 TDs, & 5 INTs

Huskies Offense: 394.6 yards/game (53rd), 5.6 yards/play (51st), & 38.8|PERCENT| 3rd Down (68th)
QB: SR Jake Locker - 230.6 ypg passing, 14 TDs, 4 INTs, & 56.5|PERCENT| comp.; 36.0 ypg rushing & 3 TDs
RB: SO Chris Polk - 90.9 ypg & 4 TDs
RB: FR Jesse Callier - 34.1 ypg
WR: JR Jermaine Kearse - 95.7 ypg & 10 TDs
WR: SR D'Andre Goodwin - 37.6 ypg & 2 TDs

Run (57th): 127.6 ypg & 10 TDs
Pass (65th): 214.7 ypg, 11 TDs, & 8 INTs

7:30 PM ET CBSC: #8 Utah 7-0 (-7) @ Air Force 5-3 - Will Utah finally be tested this week as they go on the road to face Air Force and their #1 ranked rushing offense?  Falcons QB Tim Jefferson runs the triple-option about as well as any QB, but against TCU last weekend the Falcons hit a wall.  This Utes defense may be just as good as they're top 10 in almost all statistical categories, but more importantly they're the #6 ranked rushing defense in terms of yards allowed per game, at just 87.4.  Of course Utah has yet to play anyone of serious consequence or see a rushing attack like that of Air Force.  Something that will have to improve if the Falcons are to pull the upset is their run defense.  Overall they're the 11th worst run defense in the nation, giving up over 200 ypg on the ground.  Last weekend against TCU, the Horned Frogs ran for 377 yards against them.  Their pass defense is another story, as it's allowing only 166.0 ypg, which is good for 12th best.  Those numbers mask the fact that they've really only faced a couple of teams that throw the ball well.  Oklahoma had 254 yards passing on them, while San Diego State had another 247, and there's also Northwestern State, which I'm not even sure if they're a FCS team, and they dropped 249 yards on them.  Utah's sophomore QB Jordan Wynn is one of the most accurate passers this season, completing 69.8|PERCENT| of his passes, so he shouldn't have too much trouble airing the ball out.  The Utes have won 6 of the last 7 games in this series.

Utes Offense: 467.1 yards/game (14th), 7.4 yards/play (4th), & 55.7|PERCENT| 3rd Down (3rd)
QB: SO Jordan Wynn - 213.8 ypg, 12 TDs, 5 INTs, & 69.8|PERCENT| comp.
RB: SR Eddie Wide - 58.4 ypg rushing & 7 TDs; 24.3 ypg receiving & 2 TDs
RB: SR Matt Asiata - 56.1 ypg & 5 TDs
RB: SO Sausan Shakerin - 35.0 ypg & 2 TDs
WR: SO DeVonte Christopher - 71.3 ypg & 5 TDs
WR: SR Jereme Brooks - 59.7 ypg & 4 TDs
WR: SR Shaky Smithson - 30.6 ypg & 3 TDs

Run (110th): 205.8 ypg & 16 TDs
Pass (12th): 166.0 ypg, 6 TDs, & 8 INTs

Falcons Offense: 440.3 yards/game (27th), 6.2 yards/play (29th), & 51.2|PERCENT| 3rd Down (11th)

RB: JR Asher Clark - 85.3 ypg & 3 TDs
RB: SR Jared Tew - 77.1 ypg & 3 TDs
WR: JR Jonathan Warzeka - 26.5 ypg & 1 TD
WR: JR Zach Kauth - 23.4 ypg & 2 TDs

Run (6th): 87.4 ypg & 3 TDs
Pass (10th): 159.9 ypg, 5 TDs, & 5 INTs

8:00 PM ET ABC: #2 Oregon 7-0 (-7) @ USC 5-2 - USC has had two weeks to prepare for this game and many are viewing this as their psuedo-bowl game, as they're not eligible for post-season play.  Their defense will have to show up, if they're to pull the upset.  They're the 9th worst pass defense in the nation, so expect Ducks sophomore QB Darron Thomas to throw at will against them.  Against the run the Trojans are much better, but still not great.  Sophomore RB LaMichael James will likely have his way with them because as whole, USC just doesn't tackles well.  Another factor working in Oregon's favor is the up-tempo nature of their offense, they won't wait for you to get set before they snap the ball.  The only reason USC has a chance in this game is because of their offense.  QB Matt Barkley is quietly creeping up in the Heisman race.  His numbers are almost a carbon copy of what Andrew Luck has done this season at Stanford.  He has the 7th highest QB passer rating in the nation (167.30), which isn't bad for a sophomore.  The Trojans run game isn't Oregon good, but it's a top 20 unit.  The Duck defense is what should be the difference in this game as they're much better than USC's defense, but you can pass on them.  They gave up 387 passing yards to Arizona State and 341 yards to Stanford.  The over/under for this game is 71 points, which I find to be very low as both of these teams are capable up putting up 50 points.  The Ducks have won 2 of the last 3 games against the Trojans.

Ducks Offense: 569.1 yards/game (1st), 7.3 yards/play (6th), & 46.2|PERCENT| 3rd Down (27th)
QB: SO Darron Thomas - 217.3 ypg passing, 17 TDs, 5 INTs, & 60.7|PERCENT| comp.; 38.4 ypg rushing & 2 TDs
