Summer League: Sunday Recap (Late Games)

In this post, we will try to highlight some players who are signed to contracts for 2012-13 and have a chance at being fantasy relevant in 2013-14. Some may need injuries to find the limelight, but they are all getting to show off their skills in Las Vegas. Let's take a quick spin through the late games.

Cleveland Cavaliers 69 Memphis Grizzlies 58
Tyler Zeller: To call Zeller's rookie season lackluster would probably be an overstatement. The seven-footer started the majority of the Cavaliers' games, but was never able to produce at a fantasy relevant level. If Andrew Bynum and Anderson Varejao are healthy (two big ifs), Zeller will be relegated to reserve duty. He had 11 points and nine rebounds in this game, but balanced the good with six fouls and six turnovers.
Dion Waiters: Waiters may also see a reserve role if coach Mike Brown chooses to start Jarrett Jack next to Kyrie Irving. Fortunately, the 6-4 guard served that purpose at Syracuse, so it may come naturally to him. Another natural talent is scoring. Waiters led all scorers with 23 points (7-17 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 8-12 FT) and added four rebounds and four assists. He may be one of the few draftable players at the Las Vegas Summer League.
Tony Wroten: Wroten came into the league from Washington with a reputation of being a good athlete that could not shoot. Sunday's performance will do nothing to change that perception. Wroten was just 1-of-14 from the field and missed all five of his 3-point attempts on his way to seven points. He even struggled from the line (5-of-11). Wroten will have better days.

Milwaukee Bucks 69 New Orleans Pelicans 61
Gustavo Ayon: The Bucks have plenty of bigs, so playing time for the former Magic center will be limited. However, Ayon can fulfill a role with Larry Drew's team, and he was able to show off a few skills in the win over New Orleans. Ayon had eight points, six rebounds, and two steals in the win. He won't be draftable in most leagues, but he should get a little playing time for Milwaukee.
Austin Rivers: The guard from Duke is coming off a season that would shake the ego of most basketball players. Fortunately, his role will be more limited in 2013-14 after the Pelicans brought Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans to the Big Easy. He still has a quick first step and he was able to score 15 points (7-16 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 1-2 FT) in the loss.
Brian Roberts: Roberts will also see a diminished role in 2013-14, if the Pelican starters can stay healthy. He was a surprise contributor off the New Orleans bench last season and showed off his scoring skills by putting down a game-high 20 points. He will only get backup minutes for the Pelicans in 2013-14, but could be a player to watch if injuries occur.

Atlanta Hawks 75 Miami Heat 71
Mike Scott: At Virginia, Scott was a high-usage player in a slow-down offense. He won't find that role in the NBA, but he could be a useful bruiser off the Hawk bench. Against the Heat, Scott provided 13 points and three rebounds. He was able to hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the game to clinch the win.
John Jenkins: Jenkins may be in line for more playing time since the Hawks do not look to re-sign Devin Harris and Lou Williams is coming back from an injury. The sweet-shooting 6-4 guard led the Hawks with 19 points, but was just 2-of-7 on 3-pointers. After hitting 38.4 percent of his long range shots as a rookie, Jenkins could be an impact 3-point shooter for fantasy teams in 2013-14.
Jarvis Varnado: The former Mississippi State star could be exactly what the Heat need: a shot blocking presence in the paint. He may be a little slim to fulfill that role in the NBA, but he did have three rejections in the loss to the Hawks. Varnado added eight points (4-6 FG) and seven rebounds to his tally on Sunday.

Toronto Raptors 82 San Antonio Spurs 76
Terrence Ross: With DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay ahead of him on the depth chart, there may not be many opportunities for Ross in his second season, but he is making the most of the summer league. The second-year wing provided 14 points (6-11 FG< 1-3 3Pt, 1-1 FT) with six boards and two assists. His fantasy appeal is limited, but he could be a young player to watch.

Jonas Valanciunas: Unlike Ross, Valanciunas could get major minutes as the Raptors try to develop their low post threat. His potential is somewhat limited by DeRozan and Gay, who will bogart most of the shots, but he could be an impact offensive rebounder. Against the Spurs, the seven-footer had 19 points and 13 rebounds. He went 11-of-12 from the line and could be headed in the right direction.
Aron Baynes: The New Zealander had the task of guarding Valanciunas and was able to keep the Raptor big at just 4-of-12 from the field. The Spurs will ask Baynes to provide some backup minutes behind Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter, and the former Washington State star should be able to handle the role. He finished with 11 points and nine boards.
Cory Joseph: The Spurs wanted to get a good look at Joseph, who played a game-high 35 minutes. He tied Deshaun Thomas for the team lead with 16 points, and added six rebounds and six assists. Like Baynes, Joseph will be in a reserve role for the Spurs, but he could get more playing time in his third year in the league.
