Available to open spring
March 13, 2024
Kuithe (knee) is active as Utah opens spring practices, Josh Furlong of KSL News Salt Lake City reports.
ANALYSIS
Kuithe missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered during the 2022 season, but he appears well on track for a return in 2024. The 6-foot-2 senior, who gained an extra year of eligibility from a medical redshirt, has totaled 94 receptions for 1,053 yards and nine touchdowns during his time with the Utes (23 games), and he is sure to be a priority target again when healthy.

Kuithe’s future was in doubt after a devastating knee injury sidelined him, but after over a year of rehab, Kuithe will return for a sixth season. Although he considered making a run for the NFL Draft, the outstanding year Dalton Kincaid had in his stead made Kuithe’s previous dominance a distant memory in the minds of NFL scouts. Cameron Rising loves to throw to his tight ends, so Kuither will make the best of his chance to impress. With Kincaid gone, the top job is Kuithe’s to lose, and if his knee responds well, he’ll step right back into the offense.
Utah was already tight-end heavy with its offensive philosophy and that could be even more apparent this year after the Utes lost some talent at receiver. Kuithe logged career-highs across the board in every major receiving category and his receptions spiked to 50 after a previous career-high of 34. Fellow tight end Dalton Kincaid is also a factor after catching eight touchdowns last season, but Kuithe’s role is secure nonetheless. Utah’s offense can support multiple tight ends and Kuithe is the first one to target while Kincaid is a worthy pick later in drafts.
This time last year, Kuithe was considered a Top 3 player at his position. He’s not being drafted as such this year, but it’d be a mistake to overlook him. Kuithe’s lack of touchdown production stands out as he had zero after scoring nine in 2019, but that metric isn’t always sticky year-over-year, and if anything, Kuithe’s bad touchdown luck with a 25 percent target share makes him a candidate for positive regression. He gets the added bonus of better quarterback play this season with Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer, too. Don’t let 2020’s bad luck steer you off Kuithe.
