Antoine Winfield
21-Year-Old SafetyS
2020 Fantasy Outlook
The Buccaneers hope Winfield, a 2020 second-round pick, is the answer to some of the back-end problems that have plagued their secondary under multiple coaches and coordinators in recent seasons. The former Golden Gopher couldn't kick his college career into high gear until his senior season, as injuries curtailed both his sophomore and junior campaigns after four games each. Winfield made up for it in 2019 by logging a full 13 games and nabbing seven interceptions, including one pick-six. That type of playmaking ability should give him the inside track to the starting strong safety job right from the onset, especially considering the lack of turnovers and impact defensive plays overall that once again defined the Buccaneers defense in 2019. Tampa lands in Round 2
STampa Bay Buccaneers
April 24, 2020
The Buccaneers selected Winfield in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, 45th overall.
Winfield (5-foot-9, 203) is built similarly to his father, who was strictly a corner in the NFL for Buffalo and Minnesota over an illustrious 14-year career. The younger Winfield is expected to primarily play safety, though he'll still step into the slot to play some corner every now and then. The Buccaneers are set at corner with Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean, but Winfield -- who starred for the University of Minnesota -- answers a question at safety and provides more depth for slot coverage.
